My fingernails are bluish purple, does this mean I am anemic?
I developed iron deficiency anemia a few years ago and my fingernails would often look bluish/purple. However, right now I seem to have a normal amount of energy. I read on the internet that your nails look clear in color when you have anemia, so I am confused. Does anyone know why my nails frequently turn purple?

Yeah, I think when you are anemic, your nailbeds are more pale and lacking color. I would think that bluish means there is a lack of circulation????

I agree... when I was severely anemic my nails were very pale/white. The blueish/purple color could indicate a circulation problem like the person above me just said...

I have bluish purple nails as well - not all of the time but especially when I'm cold. I have had all kinds of lung and heart tests and nothing comes back showing any problems. I thought maybe it was the anemia as well.

My nalis have very deep ridges, the color is pale, but the ridges are UGLY!! I have noticed since my infusion, that my hair has started to grow again. I'll bet that it hasn't grown more than 1/2 inch in the last year, and now over an inch in about a month. I hope the nails grow out as fast.

My fingernails have ridges, my nails are very thin and they become blue also. I have Raynaud's Syndrome and have been told I has R.S.D. though I question the second diagnosis.

Maybe it is a mild form of Raynaud's syndrome. I always get colder than other people and my fingers have gone numb in cold weather before when no one else's did. But it's strange that my fingers just started turning purple again recently (they were also purple when I was anemic, maybe just a coincidence)...
Re: My fingernails are bluish purple, does this mean I am anemic?
When I was severely anemic and receiving IV iron my nailbeds were very pale as well as the palms of my hands. My hematologist always checks my nails and my hands when he examines me. I also have Raynauds and when I'm cold they also can turn bluis or purplish because of the poor circulation. Hope this helps!
Re: My fingernails are bluish purple, does this mean I am anemic?
is your Raynauds primary or secondary, and how old were you when you were diagnosed?
Just wondering, becuse my daughter has had this since she was 13. she went to the Dr.
yesterday, he says it is Raynauds, but want to rule out anytype blood disorder. States he has never seen Raynauds in a child. Great pediatrician.

Could be lack or oxygen from other things...are your arteries clogged? or do you have some sort of underlying heart problem? I sure would be looking into that.
