Does anyone else get severe chapped lips with low ferritin levels?
This has been going on for quite some time and nothing helps.
any ideas how to get my poor lips back to normal. I feel sorry for my boyfriend who kisses me and I have scaley lips.
My lips were also very chapped with low ferritin. I found this info with a ****** search:
Mild iron deficiency anemia may not cause noticeable symptoms. If anemia is severe, symptoms may include:
* Weakness, fatigue, or lack of stamina.
* Shortness of breath during exercise.
* Difficulty concentrating.
* Pale skin.
* Craving substances that are not food (pica). In particular, a craving for ice can be a sign of iron deficiency anemia.
Babies and small children with iron deficiency anemia may not grow as expected and may have delays in skills such as walking and talking. Children may be irritable and have a short attention span. These problems usually go away when the deficiency is treated. If it is not treated, mental and behavior problems may be permanent.
I have never had cracked or chapped lips with anemia or low ferretin levels. My cousin on the other hand gets bad bouts of this and hers was found to be due to low zinc levels. My zinc levels showed up as being fine on my blood test.
Once in awhile I did get "angular stomatitis" which are the cracks/irritation that appear in the corners of your mouth. I think that is the type of problem caused by either B12 or iron deficiency anemias.
I have just found out I am anemic and my ferritin levels are only at 4 which is quite low I am told. Anyway I never thought of this as a symptom but I experiance very bad chapped lips the pervious winter and several time I had quite nasty red, flaky cracks at the corners of my mouth these were really painful and ugly but they make more sense now I know I am anemic.
Hope this helps, also I found using savlon cream helped with the healing.
