Low Hemoglobin

I am 29 weeks pregnant and my hemaglobin levels are very low. I have never had this problem in the past. Could this be pregnancy induced? My doctor is asking for a repeat test tomorrow. I was told the normal level is 12 and mine was 8 so they want to do more tests. Can I have treatments being pregnant?

Re: Low Hemoglobin

Cindy,
It's going to depend on what's causing your low hemoglobin. It can be such a wide variety of things causing it. My hemoglobin came from an autoimmune disease, called hemolytic anemia. But some have low hemoglobin from being anemic from bleeding. Others have low hemoglobin from low B12. You're looking a wide variety of treatments, from Prednisone to IV iron to B12 injections - it really depends on what's causing it. Most of the treatments are ok during pregnancy (Prednisone, B12 shots.)

A level of 8 makes me feel pretty bad. How are you dealing with it? You must be exhausted - and on top of being pregnant, that's rough.

Jill

Re: Low Hemoglobin

Anemia can be quite common during pregnancy which is why the prenatal vitamins have so much iron in them. I am assuming that you are taking prenatal vitamins? The doctor needs to ensure that your low hemoglobin is caused by iron deficiency. If so, you probably will need more supplementation. You must feel pretty badly at an 8.
