Re: What Does Slightly Anemic Mean

Anemia is a deficiency of (RBC) Red Blood Cells OR less than normal amount of (Hgb) hemoglobin.

Anemia is determined through a CBC blood test which includes the RBC, Hgb and Hct. If these fall below range on lab values (which is usually 12 at the low end), then you are considered to be anemic. 12 Hgb would be low end of normal and 14 Hgb being optimal for females and 15 high. I would think that very low values would be considered quite anemic.

Severity of anemia is as follows:
Hgb range
Grade 1 mild 10.0
Grade 2 moderate 8-10
Grade 3 serious/severe 6.5-7.9 This is the stage that they give you blood transfusions usually below 7.
Grade 4 life threatening <6.5

Re: What Does Slightly Anemic Mean

Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it. My GP sent my results to a Hematologist/Oncologist 5 days ago and I haven't heard from them yet.

thank you!

Not at this point he is only ruling out different types of anemia of chronic disease most likely. There are many ways to check to make sure that anemia is IDA related and not something more. Hope you get good results. FLFLOWERGIRL

Re: What Does Slightly Anemic Mean

Thank you, again. I do feel better that my doctor just wants to be sure it's nothing more than low blood count that can be treated with iron supplements. She put me on an iron prescription to see if that will raise my number. I see her again on 12/17.

Can you tell us what type of iron she put you on and how much? Thanks. FLFLOWERGIRL

Re: What Does Slightly Anemic Mean

The capsule is orange and brown and I think it's called Ferrin or Ferrit and it says 150 on the capsule. I take one a day.

Re: What Does Slightly Anemic Mean

I know that supplement well unfortunately. I take it under the generic name Poly-Iron 150 and I take 2X daily. There is a Ferrex 150 and Ferus 150. Maybe it's one of those that you are on. I was curious. Thanks. FLFLOWERGIRL

Does the prescription cause you a lot of side affects?

Re: What Does Slightly Anemic Mean

Cathy425--If I eat too many veggies at one time it can send me to the bathroom rather quickly, but I stopped that long ago. I just watch what I eat and I have no problems with it. I do however, drink lots of water when taking it and after to make sure I have no stomach upset.

Do you have a problem with yours? FLFLOWERGIRL

Re: What Does Slightly Anemic Mean

Hi, I haven't experienced any side effects yet, but I've only taken three dosages so far.

Ever since the doctor told me I'm anemic, it's probably all in my head, but I'm feel tired more and notice how thin and weak my fingernails are. I've never been able to grow my nails even though I keep them manicured. Also whenever I take a shower and wash my hair I lose lots of strands of hair, like a small pile every morning. Is this all signs of being anemic?
