Gastric Bypass...Anemic....low hemoglobin...who do I go to

I am new here and looking for answers. I am 5 years post surgery. Have never had any problems till recently when I started to get dizzy, pass out, leg and hip pains at night, restless legs, weight gain. My hemoglobin was 9.7 2 weeks ago and dr. ordered colonoscopy and EDG. They were both fine but my hemoglobin had dropped to 7.1. They did 2 blood transfussions Friday. Have had a CAT scan, 2-EKG's, chest x-rays, 2-D Heart Echo, Carotid artery ultrasound. All came back negative. Only problem with the blood work was low potassium and low hemoglobin so after the transfussions and levels going to 10.1 they sent me home with more questions than answers. Now...who do I go to see? How do I know what my body is absorbing and what it isn't? I am reading posts about hemotologists, internists, b-12, iron infussion. What kind of Dr. do I want to go to? Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I would say you should start with a gastroenterologist who is well-versed in gastric bypass surgery. Or a hematologist who has experience with gastric bypass so they know what do with it.

Anemia and mineral deficiency from gastric bypass is a "special" case and needs to be handled by any one of the specialist you listed who happens to know what to do with a gastric bypass patient.

I keep hearing about b-12 shots. What do they do? What is the difference between taking iron supplements and Iron Infussion?Does anyone else have restless leg or leg cramps? What causes it and what can be done about it? Is it from the gastric bypass?

B12 shots are one of the most effective ways of building up your B12 levels if you are deficient. The other good way is to take something called "sublingual" B12. This is dissolved under the tongue in either in a tablet form or liquid drops. It absorbs in the mouth and not the stomach so this type is perfect for a gastric bypass patient.

Iron supplements are just pills that are absorbed in the stomach. If you have had gastric bypass, chances are you will be wasting your time taking them as the portion of the stomach that absorbs iron has been bypassed. An iron infusion is where they give you iron, via IV, directly into the bloodstream. It will work for you as it then does not need the stomach to absorb and goes directly to the organs for storage. Many gastric bypass patients end up having to have lifelong infusions to get their iron. It is not without side effects for some people.

The restless legs and cramps are caused by the iron and other mineral deficiencies. You will need to get these levels up to stop the symptoms. It's not directly from the bypass surgery but the bypass surgery causes the malabsorption, which then causes all of your problems.

I thought that all GB patients were supposed to be on B-12 shots post op. Maybe I'm wrong. FLFLOWERGIRL

For any of you that are having side effects w/ iron, you might want to do a search on Repliva. It is a new prescription and is supposed to have less side effects and more absorption. You take the iron only 21 days a month but get absorption for 30. Good luck. What can cause anemia other than menstral problems?

Re: Gastric Bypass...Anemic....low hemoglobin...who do I go to

You need to contact a nutritionist at a hospital that specializes in gastric bypass in your area. He/she will review your diet and vitamins and suggest what could be missing. Anemia usually becomes apparent after a long time of low iron diet and lack of iron supplements. Call a place that has a complete after-surgery care program.

I am going through the same thing for the last 2 years. They have tested me for pracitcally everything and it all comes back negative. I am still losing blood. I tried the iron infusions and they did not work. I have to have blood transfusions every 3 months. For some reason my potasium runs high. Now they are testing me for Lupus. I would love to know what is going on.

I also think that you need to go to a hemotologist and get the iron infustions. I have been told that for gastric bypass patients they usually work. Good Luck. Let us know what you find out.

Re: Gastric Bypass...Anemic....low hemoglobin...who do I go to

Hi Gail,

I'm also 5 years out for gastric bypass and I go to a hematologist. next Tuesday will be my 8th iron infusion, I do feel a difference. I'm starting to have a period again I do sweat now. I didn't before. I also have really low B-12, Vitamin D. I started to buy the sublingual B-12 at Safeway its a liquid and its in a dropper... you put it under your tongue. I do get B-12 shots sometimes at the doctors office. Let us know how your doing. Hope all is getting better for you.

Stacie
