Anyone have white nails with red tips?

My nails are pale, white with a red line at the tips. Could this be due to low iron? I haven't been officially anemic for a year and a half, but have low iron and ferritin. My nails turn purply when cold.

Re: Anyone have white nails with red tips?

Littlebunnyfoo--I think that your nails tell a lot about your health status, but I have never had that. Mine are just pinkish and white throughout.

Have you checked into Raynaud's for the purplish look? You stated that when you get cold it happens. Raynauds is an autoimmune condition that causes the nails to change color in response to temperature changes. I think that the hands also change color too, like fingers are white with blue nails. I had a friend once that had this and that is how she looked.

I know that when I get cold, just in the freezer section of the grocery store my fingers turn all sorts of colors. I think that it is normal to change colors. The people that have this RP you can really see it very predominately. FLFLOWERGIRL

Re: Anyone have white nails with red tips?

Thanks for your reply Flowergirl. I have had it. All I do is worry about having some horrible disease all the time, and my body does not cooperate one bit!! There is always some new symptom to worry about.

I noticed the change in my nails in the fall - they are purpley sometimes and sometimes white with a red band near the top. I told myself it was probably related to the anemia and low iron....I tried searching on the internet and all I could find was "Terry's nail" which look and sound exactly like my nails.

And does it say that "Terry's nail" can be caused by anemia? Of course not!! It is caused by cirrhosis of the liver, cancer, heart failure and diabetes.

Anyway, I suppose I will mention this to my doctor who will probably think I'm a hypochondriac for sure.

Re: Anyone have white nails with red tips?

Littlebunnyfoo--As my doctor would say, your reading WAY too much!! I agree after anemia and all of it's nasty symptoms, it causes you to believe that there is much more going on. But in reality there probably isn't anything to worry about. The same thing happens to me when some little thing pops up, I think, here we go again. As one of my doctors told me. We may miss the small things, but we don't miss the big things. That was supposed to make me feel better, LOL, so I am passing that phrase on to you. FLFLOWERGIRL
