Please help. Im not sure what to believe!

Hi there,

I got my blood tests results back and my doctor tells me that i am low in iron and need to take suppliments. Now i obviously dont know how to read these reports, however i do have them here. What does this look like to you:

Iron 16 ( 11 - 29 ) uml/L
Transferrin 2.71 ( 2.00 - 3.80 ) g/L
Iron B Cap. 61 ( 1 - 75 ) uml/L
Transfer. S. 26 ( 25 - 55 ) %
Ferritin 22 ( 20 - 291 ) ug/L

Thats exactly how its written. My doc tells me that i am low in iron, but dont want to take iron pills if i dont need to.

Also please note that i am Thalassemic minor which means i have anemia minor.

If the above test means anything at all to someone, please let me know.

Why are you hesitant to take iron?

You are low, and you should try to get your iron stores to about 70. Not sure why you had the testing done, but if you're feeling bad, or losing hair, the iron will help.

Re: Please help. Im not sure what to believe!

Thank you for your replies.

I was only hesitant because doctors tell me different things all the time, and because im thalassemic, my anemia could easily be diagnosed as an iron deficiancy. I have heard of many doctors who have done that to patients, put them on iron pills then become sick from too much iron. So thats why i was a little scared.

So its suppose to be in the 50's or 70's? Wow im only 22!

Your iron is low. Why are you hesitant to take it? Are you feeling sick or tired?

Hey Ashley, im not hestitant anymore. Im taking them religously now every single morning.

Yes i am feeling extremely tired all the time. The only reason i was hesitant to start with was because my old doctor would always tell me i was fine when obviously i wasnt.

What are some of the side affects that some people get with these iron supplements? I am feeling very nausious all the time after starting them.

Re: Please help. Im not sure what to believe!

Hello,

I too was very hesitant when I started to take them. I take an iron pill called Slow-Fe and it is not hard on your stomach. I was taking another one and I could not take it because it made me so sick. Maybe you can ask your doctor about slow-fe.

It takes about 2 weeks before you see a difference in how you feel. My ferritin went from a 5 to 27.5 in about 3 months. I still feel tired though and weakness in my legs. Do you have any other symptoms with your low iron?
