New Blood results...help interpreting - Anemia Message Board

Ok, so I finally got all my blood results, they ran a lot of tests...so I have a lot of results. Hopefully some of you on here with more experience can help me figure some of it out. The good thing is that my ferritin is up again (this time from 7 to 13) but overall I think I'm still looking pretty low. I'm also wondering if I should think about supplementing B12 based on these results, even though my doc hasn't said anything.

RDW: 24.5 (11.5-15.5) NOTE: I really don't understand this one as it seems higher everytime they test me. Anyone know?

MPV: 7.9 (7.4-11.3)
Neutrophils: 2.86 (1.8-7)
Lymphocytes: 3.33 (1-3.20)
Monocytes: 0.41 (0-0.80)
Eosinophils: 0.14 (0-0.40)
Basophils: 0.07 (0-0.20)

Smear:
Platelets: Slightly Increased
RBCS: Microcytosis - Mild
Ovalocytes - Few

Glucose Plasma Fasting 4.8 (3.6-6.0)

GG-- I can't remember your numbers off hand, but I thought that your Hgb was around a 7 before. With that to compare with and your current labs, I think you are doing very well. You are responding to iron and this is the trick. It takes time to repair all those blood cells and to make new ones takes about 120 days.

Your B-12 really needs to be addressed too, that is way too low. Have you been checked for PA? Best of luck to you. FLFLOWERGIRL

Red cell distribution width (RDW) is a calculation of the variation in the size of your RBC's. In some anemias, such like PA, the amount of variation (Anisocytosis) in RBC size (variation in shape, poikilocytosis) causes an increased RDW.

Smear:

RBCS: Microcytosis - Mild
Ovalocytes - Few

Thanks for your reply. I didn't realize that was really low for B12. I have supplements I can take...but the docs don't even seem to think it's that low

I was being tested for celiac during the endoscopy, but as far as I know they naven't considered PA. I thought that only showed up in childhood or after 30? I'm about to be 27...so maybe that's why they aren't looking at it? I feel like it would make a lot of sense since I have a lot of neurological symptoms, but you know docs don't like to listen to their patients.
