Tests for pernicious anemia?

Is there any way to test for it other then blood tests? Im scared of needles..so i wonder if there is another way to test for it.

I've goggled and it appears i have some of the symptoms diarrhea , pins and needles, numbness, dizziness, shortness of breath, accelerated heart rate( it happens when i stand up), fatigue, slight vertigo(medical), irritability, coldness of feet, hands and stomach upsets.

I guess there are other possible causes but i just want to get it checked out without my parents and others knowing..

I also experience irritability, impatience and mood swings....but these symptoms can be easily confuse with other medical conditions as well.

Re: Tests for pernicious anemia?

Welcome to the boards! I understand not wanting to have needles probed into you. I have to lay down when I have a simple blood test or I get weird feelings. One time I couldn't stop passing out, that was a very bad experience for me. I feel like a baby, but I get through it. Needles don't bother me at all. You should discuss this with your doctor, maybe they can help you with that problem, then test.

Your symptoms could be from PA although, they could also be from anything/many things. You will need to find some way to have a blood test. This is the first step a (CBC) complete blood count to see if any of your numbers are off. Anemia would show up or low levels of the normal range. This would be a key indicator that something more is happening. They would also need to do a B-12 and folate tests because this too can cause anemia. Even if you are not anemic, these test can show low levels that would call for further testing. Tests are done in stages depending on what is medically necessary. All of this would happen long before the test for IF or Parietal Cell Anti testing would be done, if you are seeing a PCP. If the PCP can see a problem they would then send you to a GI doc or a Hematologist for more tests. Best of luck to you and keep us posted. FLFLFOWERGIRL

Re: Tests for pernicious anemia?

Thanks for replying=] i know these symptoms could be something else but im not sure...there are times when it gets bad and i become tired and dizzy, can't stand up and have no appetite to eat but other times it gets on and off so im not really sure myself. I'm quite sure it has nothing to do with my periods since i don't have heavy flows.

I'm 15 this year so its weird with my parents not knowing anything and suddenly i say i want to go for a blood test or something, its a little embarrassing But i'll try to go for them alone...

Re: Tests for pernicious anemia?

If you are only 15 you should tell your parents so that they can support you. It's not your burden.

Even if you don't have heavy flows, you may not take in more iron than is lost and this would contribute. Best of luck to you and keep us posted. FLFLOWERGIRL

Re: Tests for pernicious anemia?

I'm afraid of the blood test actually...if i were to tell me parents they'll probably not understand since the symptoms are not obvious to others and seem like normal ailments. That's why i have been keeping it from them since last year, until this year i keep on losing my concentration during lessons and its getting on my nerves.

I'll try taking more iron...probably supplements

Re: Tests for pernicious anemia?

You should never take iron without a doctor's script. It can be dangerous, especially if you are not iron deficient. If you think that concentration is bad, things can get much worse. I not even kidding. You really need that test and by sharing with your parents they can help you. I have had to take meds before just to see doctors when I was ill with my anemia. The worst was when I had to go to the emergency room for it. It's so much easier to nip it before it gets bad. You don't want to pass out and have to have blood transfusions, that would scare me more. That by the way is a much bigger needle, I'm sorry to say. Not to scare you, but it is the truth. Things are always easier to fix sooner than later. I really do know how you are feeling, but you have to be strong and find a way to get through it, your parents can help you with this and should know what is happening IMO. Keep us posted. LOL, I'm glad that you told your mum. Chinese Medicine or a Chinese doctor? You are very funny today! You may get more help than with a traditional doctor, it's worth a try anyway. Very best of luck to you. Keep us posted. FLFLOWERGIRL

Re: Tests for pernicious anemia?

Hi
You should see a doctor a chineses doctor could be ok but I would have blood tests the following FBC, Iron studies, B12 serum, Red Cell Folate, Homocystiene and a very important one is a urine test called UMMA this will show B12 deficieny if you serum level sre in the reference range.....
My son is 15 and has just been diagnosed with B12 def same as me so please get this checked out and talk to your parents about it....
Good luck

Re: Tests for pernicious anemia?

thanks for letting me know=]

my mum took me to the chinese doctor who said it was due to the long hours spent in front of the computer, having bad posture which tensed the muscles in my neck and caused poor blood circulation to my hands, feet and brain which explained the dizziness, cold feet and hands as well as poor concentration.

She prescribed some medicine and had a massage to relax the muscles in my neck. However, the symptoms remained. My neck surely felt better after the massage and my hands and feet were not cold anymore. When i mentioned my worry about having anemia, she said my fingernails were normal(which i disagreed cos they were a lil uneven), the underneath of my eyelid was not pale and i didn't have pallor(pale skin).

But I still experienced shortness of breath, palpitations, poor appetite, nausea, vertigo, fatigue, numbness of feet/hands and brain fog. the coldness returned as well, although i cut down my computer time. I don't hope i have it but i just want to know whats wrong with me={ Could it be due to a lack of excercise since i skipped gym for 2 weeks because i was feeling faint.

I was just wondering if i actually have anemia or not, does an anemic person definitely have pallor and pale skin/lips. I also experience weakness in my arms, there's no strength in it at all. Thanks for reading and please advise.

Hi
You do not have to have anemai to be deficient in B12 at all.......i dont think missing the gym has anything to do with it..You do have all the symptoms of one for sure and please do not rely on your nails for diagnosing anything....

I also do not believe sitting at the computer would cause your symptoms I dont advoacte sitting at the computer for long periods you should break every 15 mins......

You are young and need to see a doc asap........

Re: Tests for pernicious anemia?

Dito on that, you need a CBC complete blood count. You might want to share your feelings about this doctor with your mum. Best of luck to you. FLFLOWERGIRL

Re: Tests for pernicious anemia?

Has your doctor checked your thyroid levels? You're symptoms sound all toooo familiar to me, you don't need to have an enlarged goiter to have the symptoms and you are at the age of female reproduction and of course hormones that go in the speed of light, stress too adds on to it.
Look, on your next visit insist on the doctor to order labs for thyroid. You don't need an enlarged goiter to get one, I had mine for many years and thought it was just stress.
Hope you get better! Prayers!
