Although others on this board made have similar experiences taking supplements, it is unlikely that your symptoms are caused by the iron. Your symptoms suggest there may be an underlying condition that has not been identified and that unidentified condition is causing your symptoms in addition to the anemia.
Sometimes when we get lab tests we (and our doctors) focus on numbers instead of looking at the whole picture. Anemia is a SYMPTOM of something gone wrong! Best to find out what the cause is...the symptoms that you list above in addition to menstrual irregularities (many people on the menopause boards with identical symptoms), aching bones and joints, low levels of vitamin D, higher calcium levels, chronic IBS/gas/ infections suggest another condition is causing the anemia.
A couple of conditions I can think of off hand are bacterial infections carried by the Pacific Coast tick, the American dog tick, and the western black-legged tick, mosquitoes, flies, and other bugs. If this is the case, the disease may have begun as an "innocent" cold/flu, but escalated. The ebbing and waning of symptoms is not uncommon and many think they're cured when then do something different...but chances are, the old symptoms will return or new symptoms will develop.
