Hi jenbu - has a doctor recommended anything? Maybe seeing a new doctor would be a help if you feel the first doctor wasn't helpful. I don't know anything about a bleeding fibroid. My belief would be that they would likely remove it, but then again that is just a guess.
It might be more beneficial for you to post on the Women's Health section of the boards as this section deals with Anemia and low iron stores. Depending how long your fibroid has been bleeding, this could contribute to lowering your iron stores though.
Fibroids are most commonly found where estrogen is in excess. Has your doctor checked all your hormones: estrogen, progesterone and testosterone? If not, they ought to.
