MY NEW LABS...Question about the #'s - Anemia Message Board

Hi all!

My GYN ran a Iron panel just to see where Im at. (Between the GYN & the Hematologist Im really gonna run out of blood) LOL!

I started Iron pills Dec, 08

2/12/09

Total Iron 51 (40-175)
Transferritin Sat 14% (15-50)
TIBC 367 (250-450)
Ferritin 7 (10-154)

5/1/09 (I havent got the Ferritin yet, should come back this week) I just got the Ferritin result & edited it in below!

Total Iron 141 (40-175)
Ferritin 15 (10-154)
Transferritin Sat 42 (15-50)
TIBC 336 (250-450)

My hemoglobin has been in Normal range although its going up & dwn from 13.8, 12.9, 12.5, 13.1, ect......(Not going too high?

I know that your supposed to stay on Iron for awhile but is my Total iron & TransFerritin Sat getting Too high or gonna get too high? Im still on Iron 3x/day as ordered by my hematologist but my next appointment with her is not till the end of the month & she hasnt been checking the Iron panel.
My GYN & I were talking about the Iron & she said since I was there, if I wanted she can do the bloodwk so I did. I got the results from the secretary on Sat (But the Dr wasnt in to go over them).

Also, with these labs, why is my hemoglobin not going in the 14's?

I suppose if I had the ferritin #, that would be helpful but Im a little confused.......Unless my ferritin has DRAMATICALLY went from a 7 to a 100, how could my other #'s have gone up so high?

In other words, if my ferritin comes back low still (which I would think after hearing how it takes a long time to raise it) it wont be too much higher than a 7.........If I continue taking Iron to raise the Ferritin, wont the Total Iron & TransFer Sat start increasing much higher?

Is it possible to have gone up this quickly? Seems odd to me but I suppose I should lower the dose of Iron to 1 tablet a day till I speak to the dr & get the Ferrin #, huh?

Hello Rachel,

Good questions but I don't have any answers for you. I'm in a similar situation myself so I though I'd share and compare.

It does appear that your iron and Saturation % did go up quite a bit and much more than mine did. But without your ferritin number I think you need to hold off worrying that there might be an issue. I know it is easier said than done - believe me I've "been there, done that" way too many times.

I started my iron pills (Ferrex 150 twice a day - poly iron with B12 and Folic Acid)) on November 18 and just had a 5 month follow-up on April 15 with the hematologist and she told me to stop the iron and come back in 6 months.

Here's my numbers:

(Normal Range) Nov 08 - Jan 7, 09 - Apr 15 09
Ferritin (5 -148) 5 - 12 - 40
Iron (35-170) 35 - 51 - 55
Sat % (20-55) 8 - 12 - 16 - Still Low
TIBC (250-450) 442 - 393 - 339

My hemoglobin is just normal but on the low side: 11.6, 11.4, 12.7, 12.9

I'm anxious to hear if you are told to continue your iron pills or change the dosage. I don't think you should make any changes yourself but wait and here what the doctor says.

Did you take iron on the day of the lab work?

OK, I got my FERRITIN this morning.......It is 15

Ferritin 15

So this just doesnt make much sense.

I always take iron when I go for bloodwk. I was never told to stop? I would think the other tests would've been high as well, being I never stop the iron.

My doctor always has me not take the iron until after I get the blood work done. I think it can affect some of the results on the iron panel, but not hemoglobin or ferritin.
