Sudden drop in iron levels

Hi I am new on this board, I have always (even through my 2 pregnancies) had iron levels of 150 plus. I had a blood test last week and my iron levels have come back at 12. Has anyone ever experienced such a sudden drop in iron levels? Does anyone know what could have caused it? I have not had any injury or trauma. THe last time my iron levels were check was 12 months ago when I was full term pregnant and I was at 155. Confused and a little worried. I am not going back for further tests until next week and thought I would check in the meantime whether anyone else may have experienced this? Thanks for reading.

Re: Sudden drop in iron levels

are you talking about serum iron or ferritin?

Re: Sudden drop in iron levels

I am not sure. I didnt realise there were two types. I am now hoping that I am comparing my ferratin level of 155 to a hemoglobin level of 12. I don't know if that is still unusual? I guess I will just have to wait and see. Thanks for replying.

I was asking because if it is serum iron that can have pretty big fluctuations, no need to worry. if it was ferritin then it would mean you managed to deplete all your iron stores in the last 12 months, which would be a red flag in my opinion. (doctor would want to check for GI bleeding perhaps.)
