Smile Ferritin levels

hi im new to this forum.
My ferritin was 9 and i've been on 3x100mg iron per day for 3 months but it s still only 22. I am so exhausted, but the colon specialist said yesterday that level would nt make me tired as my haemoglobin is 13.6. I m 44, what should be my level for my age? It's prob caused my heavy periods they said but doing colonoscopy to check. Replies would be great.

Re: Ferritin levels

Hi! I'm relatively new as well. My ferritin levels were at one time as low as yours were. I've actually had two incidences of low ferritin in the last five years. The first time was because I had changed multi-vitamins not realizing that the new ones didn't have iron, and evidently I needed that iron! The second time (and what I am going through now) is due to a medication I am taking for another condition. I am on the ferrous sulfate tablets twice daily, and have managed to get up to 24 with my ferritin. I was up to 49 and stopped the tablets because I thought I was finally in good shape with quitting the meds that caused the ferritin problem, but my ferritin quickly went back into the 20's ((. My doc told me that mine needed to be between 50-70 to alleviate my symptoms (fatigue, coldness, hair falling out). I'm not sure about the hemoglobin, as they haven't mentioned mine was a problem. Did they talk to you about taking the iron on an empty stomach, with orange juice or other vitamin c source, and limiting caffeine?? It takes time. I know the first time this happened it took me several months (about 5 or 6) to finally get it back up to the 40's from a low of 8 or 9. I wish you the best!

Re: Ferritin levels

Try taking a 250mg vitamin c tablet with each dose of iron, this will increase your uptake by about 50%

Your levels will keep comming up slowly - a level of 22 can still make some people feel ill, so keep on with the iron until you feel better..... and when you get to that point, keep taking 1 iron tablet per day to keep your levels up nice n high

Re: Ferritin levels

Hi all!
My blood work came back that i was Moderate Microcytic Anemia due to heavy periods, I have a fibroid. My ferritin level in December 2011 was 15. The lab said the normal range is 8 -200 somethng. My hemoglobin was 8 in september then went up to 10, because i was taking iron but i stopped cause it made me sick, Anway the doctor who ordered the labs in december was a free clinic doctor, so he really doesnt give a damn and said nothing about my numbers. I walk around some days, tired, weak, dizzy and lightheaded, you name it! I cant wait to get insurance.... This doc told me that a ferritin level of 15 is not bad, THATS HARD TO BELIEVE after looking at the range! Can a ferritin of 15 make you feel bad? Its probably lower now, because im still bleeding heavy once a month, ugh

Re: Ferritin levels

YES, it can still make you feel bad to have a value of 15! My primary doc gave me the same range as 'normal', but the specialist wants my range to be no lower than 60. I haven't had it checked in a few months, but even at 22 I was having symptoms. I went to a dermatologist because my hair was falling out. She is the one that diagnosed me and told me that it needed to be much, much higher. Go see another doctor based on whatever your worst symptom is, and TELL THEM what your ferritin level is. Find one - and don't stop until you do - that deals with this on a regular basis and knows that what the 'normal' range says doesn't necessarily mean is 'normal' if you are having symptoms. You have to be persistent! When does your insurance kick in?

Thank you so much leogirl!! My insurance will kick in in a month or two. But until then, I will have to start taking iron again and dealing with this free clinic, UGH!!! i swear some doctors forget they are human and things can happen to them too! Did you feel lightheaded? or dizzy? and how often?

Re: Ferritin levels

YES< I do feel that way a lot. It all is because of the ferritin levels. Just hang in there and get an appointment NOW because you will have to wait.....by the time your appt. rolls around, the insurance will be in effect. I don't know why some doctors are that way. It is really discouraging for the patients! Please know that your levels are NOT normal no matter what that range says. I know because my specialist told me..........and she sees this situation much more frequently than my primary, who rarely does and just relies on the published ranges.

Re: Ferritin levels

My Ferritin level is 5. I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy today to rule out bleeding. They came back negative. Now I am hoping my primary doc will prescribe iron IVs. I don't seem to absorb iron from tablets. All I do is sleep and work. Everything else seems overwhelming. I am hoping persistence will pay off and resolve this. Good luck to you as well.

Re: Ferritin levels

I went back to the free clinic yesterday evening to get a refiill on my iron and the Nurse Practioner is who i saw this time. She told me that having a ferritin level of 15 is too low and indeed causing symptoms of dizziness, lightheadedness, weakness. I had my blood drawn again to see what are my numbers since november 2011. I am so tired of these doctors, pa's and nurse practioners in these free clinics and I cant wait to get insurance!! Just last month this idiot doctor told me that a level of 15 was ok and wasnt causing my sysmptoms. But when I had a paid private doc last august 2011, he told me, i needed to see a hematologist, because my hematocrit, and other stuff was low. Now thats a real doctor! I wont stop either until, i make it better. They dont realize that they are human too and things can happen to them or their love ones.

My Ferritin is 8 and my hemoglobin is 9.2, i just heard that i will continue to keep yucky symptoms until the numbers come up. But i dont think we are low enough to die. You have to be depleated for that.... the symptoms are very scary! what are yours? im dizzy and lightheaded a lot!!!!

Re: Ferritin levels and leg pain all the time HELP****

Hi guys. This is my first post. I need some help. I have restless legs so I am very familiar with that type of pain. But for about the last 8 months, I have been having leg pain that is constant and won't go away. My blood work in Oct 2011 said I had a ferritin level of 4, iron 31, hemoglobin of 10.9 so my dr put me on iron but never really addressed the ferritin levels. Now I have constant pain in my legs. I am also in pain all over my body. I am 50 years old and feel like I am 10 yrs older. What type of dr should I see? I had my primary doc run new blood work and she says my hemoglobin was better(because I take iron) but my Vit d levels were down. So now I am on prescription Vit D. Can lack of Vit d cause leg pain? I need HELP!

A ferritin level of 4 is TOO LOW!!! You need to see a Hematologist ASAP!!!! That is a specialist that deal with bloods disorders. My ferrintin is 8, and they mailed my results yesterday and my abnormal test is my Ferritin! My hemoglobin is a 9.2, i am anemic. They told me to immediately start taking 325mg of ferrous sulfate, 3 times a day. And to see a Hematologist. I bleed heavy every month due to fibroids. So Im definatley going to get that taken care of. I am 31 and I feel weak, dizzy and lightheaded some days. I even have brain fog where I cant think clearly all symptoms of Iron defiency. I even had chest pains back in August, September of 2011, these weird pains. But they went away as my numbers went up. But I stopped taking the iron and my numbers went back down and now im here feeling like crap! Now im back on my iron meds and i will stay on them, im tired of feeling like this
