Unhappy Iron defienciency Anemia, Heavy periods and Lightheaded/dizziness/fatigue

I was tol that I had Moderate Microcytic Anemia, because of my monthly heavy periods due to uterine fibroids. I bleed for 7 days, with the first 2 1/2 being VERY VERY heavy!!! Throughtout the month, I sometimes, feel dizzy, lightheaded, weak, My head is foggy and cant think straight! Some doctors say my dizziness is vertigo and some say anemia. I wish I had health insurance. Because as long as I go to free doctors, I get all kind of BS thrown at me. Does anyone else experience these symptoms with thier anemia? Please share your story with me. By the way my ferritin level in december was 15. Lab says 8 - 300 is normal range, i guess im on the low end. But he didnt seem like it was a issue. But then again, he was a free clinic doctor and they dont care!

Moderate anemia can make you feel very fatigued. The fact that the doc said "moderate" rather than mild is a clue. I've got pretty much the same issue going on--fibroids, long, heavy periods, no insurance, but I am able to pay for regular doctor visits. Right now I'm trying to figure out a way to pay for the iron infusion my doc wants me to have.

Anyway, the number you want to focus on, the one that will really tell you how you feel is the hemoglobin (HGB). It should be between 12 and 15. The lower it goes, the worse you feel. I'm at an 8.4 and just making the bed in the morning is aerobic work out for me. My HGB fell pretty rapidly so my body has not adjusted to it yet, but even so once it does I'll still feel tired, just won't get out of breath quite so easily.

INeedToKnowIt; I know the feeling of always being dizzy. Its hard to function. Dont get me wrong, many days im fine! But there are just some days, UGH!! Its scary....Do you know your numbers? Hemoglobin? Ferritin? Why are you anemic? Also you mention that iron doesnt do you any good. What do you mean by that? Iron makes me sick to my stomach if not taken with enough food. I take 325mg, 2 times a day and my numbers go up. But since i hate taking pills, i usually stop taking them after 2 weeks and my numbers go back down. This time i am going to stick to it for as long as i need too. It wouldnt be a problem, if i didnt have to take food with it ALL the dang time! I could just pop it in and keep it moving. And me having Anxiety doesn't make it any better! I get nervous over any sensation in my body, lol

That's me to a "T". I was on various iron pills, but my numbers kept dropping. My heamatologist says that once your numbers fall below a certain point oral iron doesn't help anymore. I've been on IV iron infusion therapy since November. It has raised my levels to the normal range. The only thing is that every 2 weeks I have to go to the hospital and lay there for 2 hours. If the pills are raising your iron, keep it up. Another option is trying liquid iron, it's easier on your stomach. Another thing you should look for is "Proferrin" it's the best oral iron supplement out there and has pretty much no side effects. I'm in Canada, so if you can't find Poferrin ask for a hemi-iron.

OtownGirl, Ive been thinking about oral iron... I just came from the ER, I almost passed out in the store(lightheaded, dizzy and weak, my eyes were even bothering me) and got scared! My hemo is a 9 and she said thats why im feeling this way. Also its day four of my period and I just passesd a clot the size of a small lime!! My head is killing me!! I hate to feel this way. She told me I need to hurry up and see my GYN about the fiborid. Im about to eat and take my iron. Im 31, but feel 90!! LOL

What did they have to say at the hospital? I've had that feeling before and it is scary.

Has your fibroid been confirmed? I just had one confirmed yesterday. My god the most uncomfortable test I've ever had! What is your gyn looking into doing about it?

Another thing to look into, if you haven't already, is your thyroid function. There are huge correlations between thyroid and anemia and between thyroid and fibroids. A lot of doctors will overlook it.

It's almost scary how much alike our symptoms are. Right down to us being the same age!

I had a fibroid removed in june 2009. but another grew back in 2010. Ive had my thyroid checked sveral times, and its normal. The hospital said it was anemia, my hemoglobin in a 9....and yes it is very scary....amd i am also tired of doctors puttin this on anxiety!!

Re: Iron defienciency Anemia, Heavy periods and Lightheaded/dizziness/fatigue

I got my blood results back in the mail today. My hemoglobin is 9.2 , which is anemia. And my Ferritin level is 8, which is low. My Ferritin was 15 in december 2011. So it has went down, which explains why ive been feeling so bad and dizzy/lightheaded all the time. They want me to take iron 3 times a day now. But i will be going to a Hematologist soon... i heard i might need a iron infusion.....

I have anemia due to very heavy periods. I don't know yet if it's fibroids. I do know that anemia will continue to be a problem until its cause is fixed. You can think of your iron stores like a bucket. If your bucket has a hole in it then it doesn't matter how much iron you fill it with, you will always loose iron. I saw a specialist who has begun helping me with my hormones (I am estrogen dominant) which will hopefully normalize my periods. I know this might not help those without insurance and most doctors don't look at your hormone levels because its so complicated. At least it might give you something to look into.
