14 year old with anemia

My niece had blood work done on 12/31. The results came back with hemoglobin 8.2 and ferritin 2. Her pediatrician put her on iron pills which made her really sick so he switched her to liquid iron. Yesterday she had more blood work done and her hemoglobin is now 9.1 and ferritin 1. Has anyone had their teenager do IV infusions to help get their numbers up faster? I'm really upset that her pediatrician would not send her to a hematologist three weeks ago.

If she was an adult they would have put her on infusions already. My numbers were lower than hers and I just finished 18 Venofer IV infusions. I would recommend it to anyone with low numbers. The IV infusions were easy and very fast. My numbers are 14.8 and 235 ferritin and my doctor is pleased.

If anyone could help me I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Re: 14 year old with anemia

I don't have any experience with teenagers and infusions but I can tell you that the first check she was pretty close to probably needing a blood transfusion. If I were you or her mom or the person that has control over her I would go right to another Dr or preferably a hematologist. Time to do something about it with or without this Dr's approval.

Anemia is also just a symptom of something larger that needs fixed, don't wait for her to get worse.

A 14.8 ferritin level is not very good either but if your feeling good and your Dr. is pleased then I suppose that is all that matters. Are you still taking iron?

We are waiting for the hematologist to call back with an appointment time. It's been an uphill battle to get her mom to see that she needed to go see a specialist. My hematologist did say that pediatric doctors are afraid of infusions but I hope this doctor will listen and at least try a couple and figure out what is causing her to be anemic.

My ferritin is actually 235, hemoglobin is 14.8. No more iron for now. I had a hysterectomy in December which is why the doctors think I was anemic. I'll be tested in six months.
Thanks for your help!!

Sorry I totally read them wrong! I was thinking to myself after 19 infusions and only a 14...eek. It was late, sorry. I am glad that you guys have made her an appointment I will be keeping her in my thoughts and prayers that someone does something for her. They are probably really iffy on it because of the dangers of iron overload, but even a couple to get her numbers up a little bit is better then nothing. As you and I both know living with anemia is not fun! I'm sure she feels crummy. Best wishes!

Yes after that many infusions would have been bad. She finally has appointment today at 1:10. They didn't want to see her until 2/11 and I told my sister no way. She has bad headaches that won't go away. All the symptoms she has had finally make sense. Although I just found out the 3 or 4 years ago her hemoglobin was 10.4 so she was low then and dr just said give her iron pills but my sister never did. Now she has periods so I'm sure that is the reason she's anemic. Thanks again!!!

Please keep us posted as to how the Dr. handles this it may be helpful to the lurkers or anyone coming looking for their teens in the future. I too would like to know how things go for her, if you don't mind of course!

Hoping she has a great appointment!

Well, the dr said he will leave her on liquid iron for another month and will do a CBC then. I'm not sure I agree with that when her numbers are so low. My doctor told me that pediatric doctors don't like to do infusions and he doesn't understand that. He also said it was ok for her to go on a ski trip this weekend. I'll keep updating as I know more.
