Hello, I'm 44 years old, don't smoke or drink 5' - 9" 175LBS. BP 125/83. I recently started working out - cardio. I notice when my heart rate gets above 180 I start to get a slight pain in my left shoulder. When I slow it down it goes away. I suffer from GERD. But now I'm starting to worry it might be Angina. Also, I should mention when I work out on an empty stomach it's not as bad. TIA

Yes, your symptoms seems to indicate angina.

But with 44 years and starting with exercise, who has tell you to go above 180bpm?

I would say that to start training at your age 140-160 bpm is more than enough. Theoretically 176 (220-44) should be you maximum HR and training should be at 80-90% of it.
