generalized anxiety disorder??

I know a woman who is over the top neurotic and worried about her very young children. She doesn't plug in the clock in her daughter's room because she is afraid that in her sleep, she will somehow wind the cord around her neck. She doesn't like fans in the house in case they burst into flames. She cleaned her entire house with bleach after making a thanksgiving turkey for fear of ecoli or salmonella. She was weary about letting someone recovering from meningitis (who was way past being contagious) in her house because the virus could stick on the walls. She calls her 21 year old son who goes to school out of town at least four times a day to remind him to take medication that he has been taking since he was a baby. It has gotten to the point where she calls his girlfriend to remind HER to tell him to take the medication or to take his drycleaning in. Does this sound like anxiety or obsessive compulsive disorder?

Re: generalized anxiety disorder??

Hi happyhelper,

I have chronic generalised anxiety disorder and I do relate to a lot of what this woman is going through. I never realised these patterns of thought were actually abnormal until I went into therapy and so she might not actually realise what is going on with her. I used to be afraid to have anything on my bed in case they fell of and woke me up during the night and I saw a ghost. I used to never make my own food (which I still don't really) in case I poisoned myself. These type of thought patterns and the ones she's experiencing definitely do seem like GAD to me.

Re: generalized anxiety disorder??

I've had OCD since I was a little girl and it sure sounds to me like that is what she's suffering from.
That's just my opinion, I'm by no means an expert but like I said I've had OCD for years and it sure sounds like that to me.

Re: generalized anxiety disorder??

definitely OCD coupled with anxiety disorder. You may ask the woman to take some help. This could be manifesting in other areas of her life also and professional help will go a long way

Re: generalized anxiety disorder??

I have quite a bit of those symptoms and was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder even though I was positive I suffered from OCD. It could go either way..I sometimes have a hard time differentiating between ocd and generalized anxiety. It seems a little more on the GAD side though.

Re: generalized anxiety disorder??

Hmm... I'm tending to still say GAD.

For example, the thing with unplugging the alarm clock - It's a highly irrational thought that tends to point towards GAD.
But if she were to check if it was unplugged 5 times before being able to relax, that's OCD....?
