The Best Antidepressant for Social Anxiety???

Hello everyone,

I have been having problems with social anxiety for the longest. I feel like people don't accept me and I believe that I am too sensitive. I am afraid of social situations and never really had a girlfriend because I am so scared of being rejected (I'm 25 yrs. old). I have been on Paxil CR and Paxil for a week in the past, but that gave me horrible nausea and insomnia. But it (Paxil CR) made me a social butterfly. Currently, I take Elavil for insomnia. I am gonna see a psychiatrist next month, I was wondering if anyone could suggest or reccommend an antidepressant that might work and might have less side effects. I need one that is specifically good for social anxiety. Zoloft maybe?

Thanks for all your help!

Paxil CR is best for Social Phobia, there is a recall on it now, but it will be hitting the shelves again this summer. The regular Paxil is still available. Maybe you could try a smaller dose? 10mg and go from there. Zoloft is good for social phobia as well, but in my opinion it's designed more for depression.. Good Luck..

you may do better on another type such as effexor, a SNRI type

generally all antidepressant meds help with SA about the same amount, the problem is to find 1 whose early side effects arent too severe for you and later works properly for you
paxil is heavily advertised for SA but I dont think its any better than the others

it can help to take a low starting dose, if needed, split the tablets into halves or quarters, IMO the extended release versions arent worth the extra money

Yes, they are both SSRI's. Zoloft is more similiar to Prozac as it has a longer half life than Paxil.

Paxil is also the first line of treatment for panic attacks as Zoloft responds better to Depression/Anxiety related conditions.
