Retching, Gagging, Dry Heaves...What is It?

I have been having the "gags" for about 20 years now. They started when I was 28 years old, on my first job interview after having just moved across country after being discharged from the Marines. I was pretty much free of them for the past five years but now they're back. I know they are anticipatory in nature meaning that they come on when I head out to meetings, go on a job interview, go into a new environment. They also can be brought on by brushing my tongue while brushing my teeth or by trying to swallow pills in the morning.

I'm back in the job market having sold a two businesses and the thought of going on a job interview makes my throat get tight. As I enter the building for the interview I'm certain the "gags" will return.

Anyone out there with a similar issue that can offer some advice? These things leave me trembling so I cannot write. It's embarrasing as hell and a detriment to my career.

Re: Retching, Gagging, Dry Heaves...What is It?

hi, i am 24 and have been sick for about 6 years now, i had a period recently where i wasn't sick or gagging, but like you its back and making me feel worse than ever. As you know this is anxiety about the things you are about to do, meeting etc, I get it when ibrush my tongue too and now i tend not to brush so far back, that way i know i cant be making myself gag, have you got a dry mouth for a while before you start? If so then try sipping some room temp flat lemonade first thing, that helped me, also if you have central heating on a timer that comes on before you wake that could be making you feel worse. Sorry this has turned into an essay, just try to remember that you do what you do everyday and that it will be alright!!
Good luck,
