Question Klonopin (clonazepam) -- how long does it take to work?

I was DX'd with anxiety disorder + panic attacks on Jan. 30th. My shrink said I should take 1mg clonazepam in the morning and 1mg clonazepam in the evening. So far, it hasn't worked very well and I find it exhausting and my muscles are weak. Also, I'm depressed since taking it. I'm thinking of calling and asking for lorazepam, which doesn't have such a depressant effect.

I know these are all addictive drugs, but antidepressants don't work for me.

Can anyone help?

Hey there!

Klonopin "should" work pretty shortly after you take it.

You are right though about the depressing side-effect of Klonopin. It is the only benzo that has actually been shown to decrease the release of serotonin, so it very well could be causing some depression issues (or could cause cause more depression than the others).

Ativan is very similar to Xanax, and is only half as strong for panic.. ie. .25mg of Xanax=.5mg of Ativan.

It is not metabolized in the liver so it is safer in that aspect as well....

It's not "as good" for panic, Alprazolam (Xanax) is the better alternative, IMO

It's always best to ask a doctor I agree with you though!

Talking Re: Klonopin (clonazepam) -- how long does it take to work?

Thanks BB25 -- I thought I'd responded to you but apparently forgot to "Submit". Ah well, I was rather stunned yesterday, having taken the full dose.

I do find clonazepam depressing, but I've cut my dosage in half (and I've now just taken 1/2 of a .25mg tablet, so we'll see how that works). I shall ask for Xanax at my next visit (if not sooner -- I'm still quite weak).

Did you mean thatXanax is not metabolized in the liver?

Thx again.

weakness can be caused by tensing up and fighting back against the anxiety, its best to relax and to breathe deep and slow
all benzos take about 30 to 45 minutes to work if swallowed but are much faster if disolved under the tongue
see sublingually on the net

most anxiety sufferers a re far too sensible to become addicted to benzos

Re: Klonopin (clonazepam) -- how long does it take to work?

The liver part I was talking about Ativan.. Im sorry I wasnt clearer about that!

You can make all the benzo's equal.

.5mg of xanax=1mg of ativan
.5mg of xanax=.25 mg of klonopin
.5mg or xanax=5mg of diazepam

It helps you get a better gauge if you were to switch benzos... If you were taking 1mg of Klonopin, you would need 2mg of Xanax.

If you were taking 1mg of Klonopin you would need 4mg of ativan.

Hope that helps some.

All of them are useful if given the proper doses... Sometimes it does take some time to tirate to the proper dose...

But, the Klonopin could be causing some depression issues.

A psychiatrist I talk with says Xanax can be useful for depression; although, it is not an antidepressant.

Thanks again for the info, BB25.

And thanks, hry33, for your comment about, "most anxiety sufferers are far too sensible to become addicted to benzos." I agree.
