Xanax "as needed" Questions

I am wondering, for those people who take Xanax "as needed" just how often you take it and how much you take. I would also like to hear of what things you do before reaching for the Xanax . . . what things work to settle yourself down.

I find my anxiety is the highest (sometimes through the roof) first thing in the morning. I have tried doing the relaxation and breathing stuff and telling myself that it's going to be a great day over and over again before I even get out of bed. This works as long as I am laying down, still in bed. As soon as I get up and start my day, the anxiety comes flooding in. My anxious feelings are pretty much all physical. I feel nervous, tense and restless.

I've tried to do all the right things anxiety wise, such as cutting out caffeine, eating well, exercising, meditating, soaking in a warm bath, acupuncture, seeing a psychologist etc., and I just don't feel like I am getting stronger, better and more relaxed. I honestly don't feel like I have that much going on in my life to be anxious about. I really have it pretty good.

Xanax helps me tremendously and truth be told, I would love to take it on a daily basis because it makes me feel normal (at even the smallest dose), but I know that isn't right. I've tried Lexapro and it was not right for me. The psychologist that I am seeing has given me a "Burns Anxiety Inventory" test, and I come out in the "mildly anxious" category. He does not feel that I need medication at this time and I really don't want to take anything other than the Xanax.

So, can anyone think of anything that I may be missing or share things that work for you to calm down the anxious feelings. I would truly appreciate it.

Benzodiazepines like xanax are probably the best "as needed" medications for anxiety. I have the most trouble at night as opposed to the morning. If you need one in the morning to help get you going, take one. You mentioned you don't think it's right to take Xanax on a daily basis. If it works don't worry so much about what might be right or wrong. Taking Xanax daily is no different than taking Lexapro daily. Just make sure you take it as prescribed.

Re: Xanax "as needed" Questions

Nutty: Thank you for your reply. I probably am way too hard on myself about taking the Xanax. I know it helps me and I know that I feel so much better and more normal after I take one. I don't have any friends with anxiety, and I only got hit with this last August, so it is still relatively new to me. It is nice to have these boards to "talk" to others. Still, the concept of having to take a tranquilizer to deal with daily life (and I mentioned a good daily life) is something I despise. There just has to be other ways to get through this.

Re: Xanax "as needed" Questions

jitteryme, I kow how you feel. I have had .5 mg prescrip of Xanax for three years "as needed," and I too feel guilty if I need it every day. I know, its silly, if it helps me, I should take it. It's not like I take it when I don't need it and I'm not taking a huge dose or anything, I just feel good when i can get through a day without it.

Do you know what it is in the morning that you are feeling anxious about? it must be something you are dreading during the day, otherwise why it would be so frequent in the morning? i used to get bad morning anxiety because I HATED my job, so of course getting up to go to work was a major source of morning anxiety. If you could somehow pinpoint what causes your anxiety and try to change that part of your life, that may help.

Re: Xanax "as needed" Questions

mjewell: I have no idea what it is that is making me anxious. I have talked with my psychologist over and over again about this and we have not been able to figure it out. It's not like I have work anxiety (I work from home). I really do have a good set up here, and am blessed in so many ways. My life is good. I just wish I could enjoy what I have more. Being restless and nervous all the time really takes the fun out of things.

Re: Xanax "as needed" Questions

Well, you might just have a nervous personality. Some people are that way...I have observed that "perfectionist" types are usually more nervous than more laid back people.

I have a good life too, except I have not found my dream career, but I have many things to be grateful for. I just get very very nervous sometimes and I know its irratinal, but that's just the way I am, and I probably always will be to an extent.

Nervous personality . . . you've pegged me just right. I've always been "wound rather tight" and have been a worrier but it's never really been a problem for me until last August. Now I just need to figure out what to do to fix it and get back to the way things used to be.

Re: Xanax "as needed" Questions

I am with you... I have anxiety (have been pretty good other than a panic attack two nights ago out of the blue). When my anxiety was the worst, I would put off taking a Xanax even though it always made me feel better. Was afraid of becoming dependent and think that a lot of anxiety is caused by ourselves, thinking about feeling anxious, so wanted to teach myself how to get out of the cycle on my own. I got through my wedding without a Xanax (being a shy person I definitely thought I would need to take one) and even read my own vows in front of all those people. Moments like that make me know that I can do this without the Xanax. This past anxiety attack was very scary, but I just talked myself through it. Told myself "this is only anxiety. It will pass." I ended up falling asleep, no Xanax. The next day, I was still very nervous that I was going to go back into the bad anxious place. Afraid I was going crazy. But got through the day, and today is much, much better. I believe it is, among other things, the cycle of thoughts that lead us to anxiousness... "will I be anxious?", "am I short of breath", "Will I fall asleep", etc. So turning those thoughts off is the hard part, but it is doable.

Wow...I can't even count on one hand how many Xanax I literally ate the day of my wedding, LOL. Good job on that one!

Re: Xanax "as needed" Questions

I have .5 mg xanax on a 'as needed' basis , up to 3x a day.

Mornings are the worst for me. My tremors are out of control in the morning. I brake the .5 mg in half and take that and I calm down.

I've only tried the whole .5 mg once and I got a serious headache. Some days I take it the 3x and some days I only need it once or twice. Just depends.

I don't feel bad for taking it either , if it helps that's great for me!!!

Re: Xanax "as needed" Questions

I am prescribed .5 mg of Xanax as needed. Like others have said, I feel better when I don't have to take it. I think I made it a few days without it, but was told that you can't just stop taking it abruptly.

If you feel better when you take it, then I say, "Just take it!" Who wants to be living with anxiety when one little pill is going to help.

Re: Xanax "as needed" Questions

There are days that I don't need the Xanax but this month for example I need it everyday. Don't beat yourself up for taking Xanax, it does help when nothing else can. I exercise eat healthy and try to everything I can to relax but nothing will do it sometimes. I take .5mg and on bad days, months I sometime break it in half and take .25mg in the morning and the rest at night.

Re: Xanax "as needed" Questions

I think what is bugging me most about the Xanax use is that during the month of January, I only had to take it four times, and in February, I took it ten times. I wish that were the other way around. I want to feel like I am getting better and not worse. As it is, I am only taking .25 mgs. every other day. I do feel so much better when I take it, and today it was the choice of having a crappy day without taking the Xanax or having a semi-productive day and taking it. I went ahead and took it as I am so tired of feeling nervous and tense all the time.

Re: Xanax "as needed" Questions

Don't feel like you are taking a step back just because you don't improve every month. We will ALWAYS have bad days or weeks or months, even if we are someday "cured." Believe me, i get myself in that mind trap too. Now that I take Lexapro and feel pretty good most of the time, I feel like my Xanax need should wear down to nothing, to where I don't have to take it anymore, but that's just the way it is. Some months I do extremely well, some months I don't, but just don't beat yourself up over it.
