GP really scared me! - Anxiety Message Board

God, I went to my GP today to get the results of some blood tests and whilst I was there he said to me "Are you still taking you half an asprin per day?"

Now I have never been told to do this, so I was slightly confused, I said no, should I have been and this is when he said to me

"Well, you've had a stroke haven't you?"

I was dumb founded, as far as I have been aware I have never had a stroke. I get palpatations and pretty much all the weird and scaryt feelings associated with anxiety but no-one has never mentioned a stroke to me. When I said all of this, he hummed and arggged and looked through all of my notes going back to 1982 when I was born. He then said that he couldn;t find anything to suggest I have had a stroke, so he didn;t know why the computer was throwing up this message at him.
He then apologised and said don't worry he can't find anything and I needed;t take asprin.

I came out of their feeling more paranoid then when I went in. I get severley anxious regarding my heart and I always panicing that I am having a heart attack so this has just made me more and more worried. Stupid I know but now I can;'t stop thnking about it!

Urrrrggggghhhhhhh! Indeed!!! Of course this worries you!! So...here's what you do:

You have a right to see your medical chart, to get copies of what's in your chart. Contact your doc's office and ask what form(s) you need to fill out or what letter you need to write, then DO IT! There may be a charge (like a copying fee or per hour fee for someone to run your stuff through the copier).

You can then review all your tests and records at your leisure, checking to see if there has ever been any indication that you had a stroke, or have high blood pressure or other problems.

It my very well be that a page of someone else's record with in your chart or that some info got entered incorrectly into a computer program that caused that message re: aspirin to be sent to your doc.

Wow, that is quite a bad computer glitch! Please try not to worry...people your age RARELY have heart problems. Palpitations are usually harmless, I wouldn't worry about them unless they interfere with your daily life. Then you can take medication to stabilize your heart rate, like beta-blockers. Try not to worry about yourself and worry about that idiot doctor instead. I would consider getting a new one myself.

Thank you both. I am going to ask for a copy of my noted just for my own reassurance. I am pretty sure that if I had a stroke I would have been told about it so I reckon it's just a cock up. I am definalty considering changing my GP!

While my GP was on holiday. Another temp. GP looked at my ECG, he asked me, "Are you on heart transplant waiting list?" What? I told him I wasn't need a heart, if you can give me a "disabled parking permit" then I'm appreciate! Cardio said it is anxiety! Don't panic, you can take it as a joke!
