Has anyone had any weight gain with Lexapro? - Anxiety Message Board

I am very leary on starting this new medication but right now my anxiety is at an all time high and I really do not have a choice. I am having trouble right now losing weight with diet and exercise and don't want to make it harder. Please tell me this is one that will not cause weight gain.

Hi there! First of all, you are going to get alot of different sorts of feedback, weight gain from one person, and from me, I didn't even want to eat. I starte taking Lexapro and just got worse, the anxiety also sky rocketed, so i talked to my doctor and he advised it was not the medication for me. You have to understand and I am sure you do...

but not all the meds are going to have the same side effects. It is different for everyone.

For me, it was just another horrible set-back, I couldn't sleep, I never suffered from depression, but let me tell you.....I fell into the hole. I didn't want to talk to anyone, just curl up in bed and prayed to GOD that the feelings of Lexapro would subside. I hated it. Now it has been 8 months and I can only say, thank GOD I am not taking it. Please...don't take this negatively, as I have mentioned it was not for me. Dealing with anxiety/panic was enough for me. I have tried others, but they only bring me down. Perhaps you should talk to your doctor about how you are feeling and along with his/her help, they can do soemthing or maybe change dosage.

Maybe my reply isn't helpful.......that is because (not to repeat myself) but these meds are different for everyone.

I took both Lexapro and Paxil CR. When I started taking it, I was under weight and before the serious anxiety hit me (from another failed marriage), I had always carried about 20 extra pounds. Well, I felt that taking the meds. did help me to calm down but I think I was almost too relaxed and sleepy alot. When I was less anxious, I found I would eat more and gradually put on weight. I didn't feel it was my metabolism slowing or anything, I think just eating again put on the weight. Though I did enjoy being thin, I admitted to myself overweight and happy was much better. I vowed to never let my weight be an issue in my life again take being healthier over it any day. I had to quit taking the medicine because it was costing me too much but plan to start again because I feel the anxiety is returning.

If you can, don't let your weight get in the way of doing something that may help you feel better. Fat or thin, what you feel like inside is more important.
