In plain English what is Anxiety?

I have searched the net for a simply answer as to what is anxiety and why do some people have it and others don't, and what causes one to have anxiety. Maybe it's just me but I still don't understand anxiety.
Can someone please put it in language I might understand?
Thanks

Re: In plain English what is Anxiety?

anxiety is worry, it's fear it's like what you get before a driving test ect. an anxiety disorder is when fear and worry can not be controled.te person can't stop worrying, and fear can very out of perspective and about nothing in particular.the fear and worry is much stronger than in basic every day anxiety. it also can cause panic attacks which is like feelings of extreme fear and doom like you're going to die. it can cause musle ache, stomache pain tiredness, depression, unwanted and disturbing thoughs, insomnia, and pulputations.

Re: In plain English what is Anxiety?

That is actually a very good question: like the previous poster said it is the feeling you get before a big test or date, those little butterflies in your stomach. On the extreme level anxiety controls your life, afraid to go outside in case something bad happens, that headache is not a headache but a brain tumor that is quickly going. The worst part is you know these thoughts are irrational but there is little you can do about them. I have had social anxiety and GAD at some level since I was a small child. The cause of it I do not have a clue

Re: In plain English what is Anxiety?

in biological terms anxiety is your body's way of telling you that you perceive danger and giving you the extra adrenaline to deal with that danger

it keeps you alert and gives you a temporary boost of energy/strength

The problem is training your mind that something or some situation that you see as a threat, as a danger, actually isn't - such as spiders, or being outside, or seeing slow-mo replays of sports injuries (that one really gets me).
