Question fluoxetine any1?

so i finally went to the docs for depression and anxiety(go me!). anyways, my doc started me on 20mgs of fluoxetine a day, now i havnt a notion what all this is. i know i take the tablet-but what is it? i researched and it came up prozac in brackets. does every1 with depression get prozac? see not to label, but i always thought prozac was for severe depression? any1 tell me? im confused as to my exact diagnosis. obviously depression, but on what scale. she said people with mild depression ususally just go to counselling but when it is more severe meds are needed-and then she gave me meds-what does this mean. all i can find on the net is that fluoxetine is treatment for major depression, sometimes tho it just says depression. can any1 tell me if they are on it too or if they just know-is fluoxetine prozac? does this gets prescripted to every1 with depression or does this mean im severe classified? sorry im just confused cos theres alot names and i dont know were i stand-till my nxt appointment in 2wks. thanx xox

Re: fluoxetine any1?

Fluoxetine is generic Prozac. No, it doesn't get prescribed to everyone, but Prozac has kind of taken on a "generic" name, just like "Kleenex" seems to be generic for paper tissues.

I don't think that Prozac is necessarily prescribed only for severe depression. It's an SSRI, and those are frequently first choice for anxiety/depression, which are usually linked. 20 mg. is a fairly mild dose.

Congratulations on going to the doctor! You've taken an important step.
