Why the High Cost Of Xanax XR ???

I went to my new p-doc today. I was happy when she prescribed me 4mg daily of Xanax XR. I was taking 3mg of regular Xanax a day. I donít exactly know what is going on if I'm having breakthrough anxiety do to a lot of recent stress (Mother died, we moved and Iím unemployed) Iím hoping this extra mg will help me through this crisis time. I do plan on going back to a lower level when Iím feeling better. Tomorrow I go to a community-counseling center. The Doc liked the idea and said the facility had some great counselors experienced with panic disorder.

That was the good part of the day. I usually find the best prices on prescriptions at Wal-mart. One month of regular Alprazolam (90-1mg) is $18.88. With WM being in the news about dropping the price of many medications to $4.00 I was hoping for an even better price. Was I in shock when they told me the one month prescription of Xanax XR was $285.00 I could not believe it!!! I asked about a generic and they checked and there was Aprozalam ER for about $80.00 a month cheaper. I decided to go with that.

Iím hoping this helps me soon and can get a job that pays for prescription. I don't think I can afford being on this for a long time. Any one have any idea why this would cost so much?

Re: Why the High Cost Of Xanax XR ???

Yes, it's because the medicine is only manufactured as a generic by one company, and the generic is relatively new. It's the law of supply and demand. When there are more generic manufacturers, the price of the medicine goes down. When there is only one, a company doesn't have to lower its cost too far below the brand name drug. When there are several generics for a drug, those companies have to compete, hence lowering their rates. You'll probably see more pharmacies than just Wal-Mart lower their generic prescription cost to $4.00. Competition drives the price of the medicine down in the case of medicines.

Newer generics and brand name drugs are always more expensive. An older medicine with several generic manufacturers is typically going to be more expensive.
