social anxiety sufferer.please. any tips?

i was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder or social phobia when I was 17. but is seems like i have had it all my life. i want to post on other threads to offer any advice i can give, but own problems are nawing at my brain. i was at a university for two years. i went to a foreign country for four months and when i came back i had to go to the psych ward. i was at the psych ward for two weeks. this month wil make it my one year anniversary. i have been taking paxil. i am now 21. i shouldnt be feeling so scared to talk to people and i shouldnt be so shy. that is what everyone, my family and friends, tell me. society tells us shyness is a bad thing. paxil has been called the anti-shyness drug. it makes me sad to think that sadness is thought so badly of. but...my shyness is not just shyness. its social anxiety and it feels so real. i am just tired. i have become sad because of it. but please. can anyone please tell me how to just talk to people and not stop just because i think everyone thinks negative things of me. when i know im not all that bad a person....i want to help people as a psych major...please. ne tips would be super appreciated....

Re: social anxiety sufferer.please. any tips?

As you state, the problem is how you are thinking about these things - including how you are thinking about yourself. You say you know you are not a bad person and as true as that may be, there is obviously still some part of you that thinks otherwise. There is probably many thought patterns hiding in your mind which are not realistic and can be causing your anxiety. Do a net search on cognitive behavior therapy and rational emotive therapy. There is some good free information on the net and some good books available.
