Re: citalopram for social anxiety

hi anxioushusky

Im on escitalopram the 'sister' of citalopram almost identical med.
On my med sheet it is prescribed for social anxiety and the usual dose is 10mgs a day (equal to 20mgs of citalopram.)

Re: citalopram for social anxiety

I took this for months. You swallow the pill. And 20mg is high to start. I started at 10mg.

It worked great for my social anxiety.

Re: citalopram for social anxiety

what can happen since its such a high starting dose? just more side affects that will fade over time?

Re: citalopram for social anxiety

Usually doctors will start you on a low dose to get used to the medication. Nothing bad will happen. Some people actually do fine starting with a higher dose. You may get some side effects - but should leave in time.

doctor's say you need to get to 20mg anyway.

Have you started taking it yet?

Re: citalopram for social anxiety

Hi I am on 20 mg of citalopram and you swallow the pill, i also started at 10mg.... i have severe social anxiety it has helped some but it hasnt done too much for my anxiety, but it is a great drug, the only one that i have stuck to taking for 1 2/2 years i usually give up on drugs quick, also it did kill my self drive. but it helps me enough that i dont even care about sex.

Re: citalopram for social anxiety

My doctor started me on Lexapro. It was a good drug but it made me too "zombiesh" during the day. He switched me to Celexa and it was great. In fact, it all but cured my depression but had little effect on my anxiety disorder. Come to find out, Celexa is not a very good anxiety drug. After taking Celexa for about 6 months, he just switched me to Cymbalta. I have not had enough time to find out if it will work. I understand what you're saying about Celexa not helping your anxiety.

Re: citalopram for social anxiety

The initial side effects of just about any anxiety/depression medication will fade over time as long as you stick with the drug and take it like you're supposed to.

Re: citalopram for social anxiety

Hi celexa did help me to a certain degree with my social phobia, its probably the best anti depressant, it doenst make me feel like a zombi or has any side effects it calms me down, however for sever anxiety it doesnt help, you need a benzo for that like xanax or klonopin, but celexa works wonders.

Re: citalopram for social anxiety

hello my boyfriend has just started taking citlopram for social anxiety disorder too.
he's on 20mg aswell and has had no bad side effects yet (other than a little loss of apitite, which isnt bad for him as he wants to loose weight!)

he's been on them for a month now.. so it's still early. he's been given an appoinment with the thearpist too though, have you? i think, pills will only do good for the short term, and you dont want to be taking pills forever, maybe you should ask you're doctor about that..? (if you havent already)

good luck
