Need to change meds, but afraid to - Anxiety Message Board

Hi All,

I've suffered from anxiety attacks my entire life. The first that I remember was when I was in kindergarten, I'm 45 yrs old now. They are completely debilitating for me, and once they flare up they last for months.

Any way, I take Paxil, and have for about 15+ years. During that time I've gained over 50 pounds and a few years ago I started sweating profusely. When we have beautiful 70 degree Spring days, I'm miserable. The sweating starts on my scalp, completly drenches my face neck and upper body. Needless to say it is very uncomfortable and embarassing. I bring sweat bands and hand towels to work and I'm an administrator. People often ask if I'm alright because just talking with someone makes me sweat--oh and my face and neck get extremly red.

Anyway, its time for me to switch meds. I have a very sweet doctor, but she isn't great when it comes to anxiety issues. So, I'm looking for information about how to switch without having anxiety attacks. Which meds produce the least side effects. What have your experiences been with changing meds.

Any and all of your replies will be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible that your sweats are hot flashes. You are getting to the age where this can start. I take buspar for my anxiety as I have a problem with antidepressants. God bless

No, I don't think my sweats are from hot flashes. The slightest exertion makes me sweat. My favorite temps are when its below 60 degrees. I live in CT and don't wear a winter coat unless its below 0. Even my family thinks its strange, they can be freezing in winter clothing while I'm in a tshirt.

I'm surprised that more people havent replied to my quest for info, thank you for answering.

Hi Chipper, sorry not alot of people responded. I personally don't know that much about all the different medications. I have only been on Zoloft for 15 years.

However, from what I gather, EVERYONE reacts differently to medications. What would be a annoying side effect for one person may not bother you at all and vice-versa.

I would suggest using the internet to research various medications and tell your doctor you would like to try that one. Might be trial and error process until you find the right medication for you.
