Distractions - hobbies?

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to think of a good hobby to get involved in to take my mind off anxiety - has anyone taken up a hobby or interest that they can recommend is great for distraction when the anxiety is a little too much? I tried dancing but its not really my thing, and I already exercise regularly - I was thinking maybe something i can do with my hands, that I can do at any time? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
Leigh

I agree with the crochet. I also do crossword puzzles.

i took a pottery class which was quite nice! you get to pound on the clay and also can use the wheel which is kind of relaxing.

I started crocheting. It definately comes in handy around christmas. I made everyone in my family scarfs. Someone actually aske dmy sis in law where she got her scarf because they wanted to buy one.

I hated reading while I was growing up, but now I try to read to take my mind off of things and make me tired at night time. That worked for me.

Re: Distractions - hobbies?

Hi,
While these may not be things you can just pick up and do "anytime", they've worked wonders for me! I've taken up rock climbing (indoor/gym) and boxing. I go 2-4 times a week to let it out. Those are great outlets for me. They are also helping to build self-confidence in addition to being amazing exercise.

Do you like to draw? Keeping a small sketchpad and pen/pencil nearby can be a great outlet. Doesn't matter about your perceived artistic ability or not... just do it. Keeps the hands and mind occupied. Observe people, places, and just squiggle them down. Even just silly doodles that reflect whatever you're feeling. If you do it persistently, you'll start to notice your own distinctive drawing style.

As for everyday distractions, I typically read. I love fiction for the "escape" factor, and even picking up a non-fiction book on some random subject I've always wondered about can be entertaining. I've had several people suggest knitting/crochet, but that's just not my thing. Seems to be therapeutic for a few of my friends though.
