Taking Pexeva(Paxil)- how will I know when i'm better?

I started taking Pexeva 3 days ago for Panic attacks while driving or being in a car. I'm a little confused though. Do I just have to face my fears one day and go for a long drive and see if I have a panic attack or not? Reciently I've been getting theses urges to take a long drive, but I'm not sure if its in my head or its the meds. Should I wait a couple weeks and let the meds settle in a little better before I try driving again? Also when I think about driving I don't have the Anxious feelings I used to, where I would try to plan every route out in my head.

anyways, if anyone has any stories of how they overcame their fear while on an SSRI I would love to hear it. Thanks!

Re: Taking Pexeva(Paxil)- how will I know when i'm better?

Im taking Prozac which comes from same family as the one your taking , and i had a terrible fear of driving and being driven too. Byt even from day 1 of starting Prozac as debilitating as it was for me, i made myself drive as i didnt want to get into avoidance.

But ive been on Prozac 8 weeks now and i can say im way better now in the car, i can drive places without the shortness of breath i was suffering before, i wont say its gone completely but its taken the edge of the worst anxiety. But these drugs DO take time, so you may have to give it a lot more time yet, dont stop them, they will eventually build up and kick in , have faith

Re: Taking Pexeva(Paxil)- how will I know when i'm better?

thanks for commenting on my other post inferit, about taking xanax with paxil and commenting on my other post about paxil in general, so you started taking paxil huh? I still didn't work up the courage to start it yet, I may do it tomorrow or the next day, ha, I'm just so worried about having to go to work and function and stuff, and just sooo petrified about what might happen from taking it, so anyway, so far so good for you?? nothing earth shattering?? I get headaches a lot anyway, so I'm sure some Advil will take care of that, but who knows, anyway, let me know how your doing on that medicine, how many Milligrams are you taking daily? I'm supposed to do 10 mg.

Thanks for the comment Worrybucket. I just wish It didn't take so long to start working.

Matty: I'm on 10mg/day for 30 days. Overall for me, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. The first day was kind of "yuck" I felt like a had a mild flu. I'm currently still a little dizzy with a mild headache but those are getting better. Other than that I don't really feel any different. Hopefully that will change when the meds kick in.

Re: Taking Pexeva(Paxil)- how will I know when i'm better?

thats not too bad, who knows when I'm gonna work up the courage to finally just pop that pill and say the heck with it, lol, i really need to, i don't know why i just can't be brave enough to do it, do you have a benzo to help you sleep like xanax or anything? I got xanax, if i do start taking the paxil i'm gonna be on xanax like crazy just to keep myself from like freaking out, so what are you on the medication for? panic disorder or what? and how come only 30 days? your not gonna stay on it longer?

Re: Taking Pexeva(Paxil)- how will I know when i'm better?

Matty: I was also really nervous about taking the first pill. I thought I was going to freak out and have multiple panic attack. What I did was took it right before I slept so I wouldn't have to deal with it hitting me. I'm not on any type of Benzos yet. I was told by my Doc if I needed to I could come back and he'd give me something to help calm me down more until the Pexeva kicks in. I really don't know why he only wants me to take it for 30 days. If I'm not improved I was told to come back. I'm taking Pexeva for Panic attacks I get while in or driving a car. Basically got to a point where I wasn't driving because I didn't trust myself on the road with a full blown panic attack.

Its kind of funny how much I can relate to you about taking that first pill. I had these pills on my computer desk for a good week before I started them. I remember I kept telling myself to take it, but just could not work up the courage to do it.

Another idea I read a lot about is people taking 1/2 the prescribed dose. In your case 5mg for a week then going up to 10mg. So the initial side effects are not so bad. You need to talk to your Doctor first though.

Re: Taking Pexeva(Paxil)- how will I know when i'm better?

Matty,

Like me you will take that pill, when you hit rock bottom with this, when you really feel you cant do this alone anymore. Thats where i got with it. I fought not taking my pills for 3 months, but i look at that as a waste of 3 months, as im sure their making me feel a whole lot better, and im now thinking why did i go through the whole summer suffering when i could have been (although not there yet) here where i am now.

Under a good doctors guidance you will be fine, if you really feel the need to move forwaard, and the Doc has said take some med help, then you really should listen to him/her. Good luck

Re: Taking Pexeva(Paxil)- how will I know when i'm better?

hey worrybucket, how are you doing on your paxil, I still never took mine, I'm going to just wait til I go to the psychiatrist on the 11th of October, because I want a specialist to prescribe me something and not just my family doctor, I'd feel more comfortable that way, and besides, from what I hear there's better more modern day SSRI's then Paxil, too much bad thing I've heard about it to risk taking it, even as bad as I'm suffering with my fears and anxiety, but anyway, how is it working for you? hopefully good

Re: Taking Pexeva(Paxil)- how will I know when i'm better?

Matty, You still haven't tried it

I think your letting your fear get in the way of your recovery. I been on it 16 days now and I have to say all my side effect are gone for the most part, and I DO feel a lot better. When I feel a panic attack coming I can control them a lot easier now. I don't flip out like I used to. This gives me more confidence to face my LAST fear and thats driving. Its only been a couple weeks for me, but I can tell you that it really has improved my quality of life.

I still get nervous now and again, but I'm able to control it and not have a panic attack. I'll shoot you straight though, when I first started the meds I felt pretty weird the first few days. I was dizzy, constant headache, general "drugged" feeling, and tired. But thats normal for your body to get used to it, like a lot of meds out there.

I used to have a fear of taking pills even something as simple as Tylenol. It was hard for me to take my first Pexeva. Heck it was hard for about a week, I always had this fear of having a panic attack if I took any type of meds. But now I just pop them in and chew them up and don't even think twice about it. I used to get nervous over all kinds of little things that wasn't normal.

I really think you should give it a try. Its not some taboo med, lot of people took Paxil before. It won't kill you and if you don't like it- quit. I'm by no means a Doctor or anything, but if it was something your family doc wants you to try, why not? It could actually help you recover from your attacks.
