Question Desperate!!! Has Anyone Felt Like This On Xanax?

I really need some answers. I can not get a diagnosis from any docs about whats going on with me. I have anxiety and panic attacks. I started xanax a year ago I take .25 mg 3 times day. My question is has anyone ever felt that there equilibrium is off? For 5 months I have felt so weird like I'm being pulled to one side or the other, I call it dizzy but I don't have spinning or visual problems, just feel like i'm on a boat , or when I'm come down my steps, when I'm done I still feel like I'm coming down them. I hate it I can't work or function. I had every test done, I mean every test you can think of. I've been on all kinds off message boards looking for help, but none so far. I'm hoping there is someone like me out there. I'm weaning myself off of the xanax I started 2 days ago so it will take atleaste a month to stop. I stopped a couple of months ago but only for 2 wks, so I don't know if it would of helped me or not. Also this dizziness never goes away it is constant. thanks hollygirl33

The dizziness and problems your having is this while your on xanax or not on it.
I'v tried Xanax and it worked at sedating me then stopped working.
Have you tried Klonopin?

Re: Desperate!!! Has Anyone Felt Like This On Xanax?

it happens on and off of it. Yes i did try valium but it made me sick after second dose, I can't take to much everything makes me feel crappy except the xanax. I wonder if the xanax is giving me this weird feeling? I'll find out when I'm done weaning myself off but I've heard it may take awhile to feel normal cause the med has some crazy side affects even when your done taking it. thanks hollygirl33

Re: Desperate!!! Has Anyone Felt Like This On Xanax?

Hi Holly! I can remember about 11 years ago getting very sick from Tegretol and becoming what is known as "ototoxic". I was allergic to the med and it threw my balance off so badly(it affected my inner ear) that I began vomiting and had to take meclizine to straighten my ears out. Perhaps this is what's happening to you, only in a milder form. Check with your regular doctor and see what they say. I really hope you feel better soon. Take care--Hopeto--

Re: Desperate!!! Has Anyone Felt Like This On Xanax?

Hi Hope I have read about ototoxic meds and xanax is on the list. But I've been to 2 ENT docs one which is a top doc in Philadelphia and he says my ears are great, i had all the test done on my ears twice. Not to say it's not possiable that is whats wrong. I've read a few articles about ototoxic side affects and it seems I could have a problem or then again maybe not. All I know is I gotta get better. Then ent top doc said it's all in my brain, he says things happen like this and I should do vestibular therapy, which I start tues, I hope to it helps. Thanks for your reply Hope. hollygirl33

Re: Desperate!!! Has Anyone Felt Like This On Xanax?

Not sure what tests the ENT did but you might have to go to one that specializes in balance disorders if you have not.

I am going to be going to one in Edison NJ on July 8th. I take small amounts of ativan, but had vertigo and BPPV in December. I went to local balance center and had a test and then had vestibular therapy and still don't think I am ok, but am fairly sure its not the ativan.

A regular ( even good ENT) will most likely not find a thing. Did you have the test with goggles on? Did you have any balance tests?

If you went to a specialist in balance, then it might be something else.

Re: Desperate!!! Has Anyone Felt Like This On Xanax?

silly, I had those test, vemp, caloric, all of them and a balance test, goggles. They came out good but I fail the romberg all the time, which is standing feet together eyes closed for 30 seconds i will fall if i don't catch myself. They all agree i have a balance issue but can't find an answer. This the worst thing I've ever had to deal with, I'm sooo depressed all the time, I just cry. All I can do is pray the vestibular therapy helps and I'm going to talk to neurologist tomorrow about maybe a migrain treatment plan, I've read many things on MAV migraine associated vertigo, I don't think I have that, but also read things on the brain and how migrains work, I could have this and not even know it. I heard Elavil is good at treating special migraine disorders.Who knows? Not knowing what causes this is the hardest to deal with. Oh God i could go on and on about my depression, and anxiety/panic attacks but I won't. Everyone on this board knows how it feels to have anxiety. It's awful. But when you add another symptom to it forget it you just want to crawl into a hole. Ok I gotta stay positive, stop complaining. LOL. Anyhow thanks for your reply take care hollygirl33

Re: Desperate!!! Has Anyone Felt Like This On Xanax?

I know the feeling hollygirl. I never had anxiety until 2003/04. Came out of the blue, but think it was from body and hormonal changes. Had 4 years of almost normal, then vertigo and daughter ill in December sent me for a new and horrible round.

In my case I think ears may have a part. Not causing the anxiety but contributing perhaps.

I was on elavil a few years back. Made me gain weight and I did not know it but its an antidepressant as well.

Good luck

Re: Desperate!!! Has Anyone Felt Like This On Xanax?

Hey, Holly. I'm on Xanax, too, for panic and anxiety. Was just reading through the boards, and wanted to let you know you're in my thoughts. I hope you get some answers with some new therapy. Please make sure to keep us posted on your progress. I think you said you're weaning yourself off of the Xanax, right? Have you noticed any improvement, even just a little? I suppose even after weaning off, if it was the med, it would take a while for your body to get back to normal. Who knows? Maybe it has nothing to do with the med. I really feel for you. Just know one day you WILL get to the bottom of this. I can tell you're determined not to let this control you. Stay strong and keep us posted.

Re: Desperate!!! Has Anyone Felt Like This On Xanax?

I was on Ativan for 18 mos when I got an inner ear infection. It literally gave me back me life. Fast forward 18 mos and I started feeling dizzy, disoriented, etc. I thought it was the inner ear problem recurfacing.. Wrong, it turned out I was becoming "dose tolerant" to the Ativan I was taking. If I increased my dose, the symptoms went away within hrs. It was at that point I decided I needed to get off of Ativan. I did a water taper and tapered off VERY, VERY slowly. It took me 18 mos to get off 1mg. I had these dizzy, spacy, sick feelings for the entire 18 mos and then another 6-9 mos after I was completely off the Ativan. You might want to consider this.

Good luck. I know exactly how you feel.

Re: Desperate!!! Has Anyone Felt Like This On Xanax?

nell thanks so much for your support, it feels better knowing other people feel the same or just show they care.i went to neurologist again today, he said I most likely suffer from psycogenic dizziness. That thought has crossed my mind, but how could I do this to myself????? How? I read up on it and I'll be damned i have every symptom. i have anxiety all the time and that is a tell tale sign of this dizziness. They can find no medical reason for my dizziness, so the next step is to look into my brain and see why I have this. So between my vestibular therapy I'm gonna go to see a therapist. My neuro said this woman was real good with anxiety disorders and said it might help. Shoot what do i have to lose at this point. NOTHING!!!! Right?. I'll keep you guys updated. Also i decided to take a higher dose of my xanax today just to see the results and it helped alittle bit with the dizziness, just a tad bit though. I'll post with updates. Thanks everyone hope all goes well in your lives also. Damn just as i got done typing the phone rings I can't see the new therapist she doen't take new patients. Damn!!!! Ok like I said hope to update soon and hopefully a good one. take Care hollygirl33

Re: Desperate!!! Has Anyone Felt Like This On Xanax?

thanks sticher i just posted while you were. lol I am tapering the xanax, but i took a higher dose and do feel alittle better with it, but i am going to still taper off, just wanted to try it to see what happened, my taper off xanax will take me a month, i did it in april and was fine with side affects, so i think i can do it in a month again. the side affects were very mild for me so i could be one of the lucky ones? although i don't feel like one now. thanks for your reply i'll update soon. Also i read this board everyday so if you want to talk i'll check in. take care hollygirl33

Re: Desperate!!! Has Anyone Felt Like This On Xanax?

Hi. Not sure if this is a coincidence or not but my equilibrium was off during an anxiety episode of about a month in March. I took xanax .25 twice a day. I did the ENT tests and they think it is allergy induced for me. I fall over if my eyes are shut. Anyway, I started zoloft while I tapered off of xanax and now I'm just on zoloft and taking nasacort at night. Sometimes I feel my equilibrium is off but only when I go from sitting to standing. So, for me, whether it was getting rid of xanax, starting zoloft or starting nasacort...one of those worked for me! Good luck to you!

Re: Desperate!!! Has Anyone Felt Like This On Xanax?

hunt how long did you taper off the xanax? I am taking .25mg 2 times day now. then I'm going to one .25mg next week then I was thinking a half of .25mg for a few days? Total time 3 and half weeks to a month. Let me know. I've been on it since june 2007. I hope I feel better this balance/dizzy stuff has to go. Thanks hollygirl

Re: Desperate!!! Has Anyone Felt Like This On Xanax?

Hi I wanted to update my ongoing dizzy problem. As this might help someone else who suffers or suffered like me. I noted that I was tapering the xanax and I am done. I took my last pill tuesday July 1st. I am feeling better the balance and movement sensations have calmed down. I also have less anxiety now than I did just 2 to 3 wks ago. I still have symptoms just not as strong, I have good and bad days. I also did vestibular therapy which is balance therapy, witch I have to continue for another month or so. I've read so many post about the terrible side effects from taking benzo's. I am convinced that the xanax has screwed up my brain. I've read that many people have memory loss, derealization and other weird side effects. My side effect is called proprioception malfunction. meaning my brain is messed up and I have to retrain my body to balance correctly. it's like I was walking on a boat. CRAZY!!! I can only hope that I can help others who may have this problem, because i had to help myself no one could give me a real answer. I know taking meds has helped me, but taking them 3 times a day not when needed was the biggest mistake I and my doc made.
