Is it just me or does Zoloft cause major somnolence/drowsiness?

Zoloft doesn't make me "sleepy" but gives me a feeling like Melatonin. Somnolence I suppose. It makes me feel "good" but tired. The feeling you get when you've accomplished a lot during the day and are finally in bed peacefully waiting to sleep.

It's a great feeling, and my ideal world is one in which I can sleep all day, but this state has ruined my GPA and life. I can't get anything done, I don't feel like talking, I sleep anytime I have a chance, etc.

I was taking Zoloft for about 8-12 months. It worked AMAZINGLY well for my anxiety and depression (I take it more for anxiety though), but I just can't stand the somnolence. Drugs are good. They're fine, they're ethical, they work, etc. I'm not looking for drug-free therapy. I just want anxiety medicine that doesn't make me drowsy.

I'm currently also taking Wellbutrin (by itself it works great for my energy level, but doesn't do much for my anxiety). I'm thinking about getting on Effexor..

What has your experience on Effexor been? Especially those who've taken zoloft with the same problem I have.

Re: Is it just me or does Zoloft cause major somnolence/drowsiness?

Im a newbie and know that females have other issuses to discuss concerning their meds. Ive found this site totally exiting. As for your prescriptions, I have taken Zoloft for a year or more for panic disorder/depressive disorder as a side-kick. I know that Zoloft has been used for panic/anxiety for years and of course was once used exclusively for depression. Why the Wellbutrin? Maybe ask your doc that Zoloft is all you need.

Just a suggestion....Why kill a bird with 2 stones when one is all you need. Just ask about it.

Re: Is it just me or does Zoloft cause major somnolence/drowsiness?

Yes, Zoloft can cause that in some individuals. I stopped taking it because it made me sleep all day. It really interfered with schoolwork. For me, all SSRIs made me incredibly tired. After Zoloft, I also took Lexapro and Prozac, both of which made me just as tired as Zoloft did. I have never taken Effexor, so I do not know if that makes you just as tired as Zoloft, but I was not surprised to read that you are having incredible fatigue on Zoloft. With my experience on Zoloft, the dosage didn't make a difference. I took 25 mg for about 8 months (it was the first anti-anxiety medication I took), and it sort of helped with my anxiety/OCD, but not much. So, my doctor increased the dosage to 75 mg. That's when I began experiencing the tiredness. I eventually was taking 250 mg, the maximum dosage, because the Zoloft wasn't doing anything for my anxiety/OCD. And it still was making me incredibly tired. I am now taking Anafranil for my OCD, and it's the first medication that has actually worked for me. It still makes me tired, but unlike the SSRIs, I'm able to get my work done. If I have the chance to sleep, I will, but I'm able to be awake when something needs to get accomplished.
