Lexapro or Prozac?

I am currently taking 10 mg of Prozac for depression and anxiety. I am also taking .25 mg of xanax as needed. I don't have to take it much anymore though. I went to a followup appt with a neurologist I saw a few months ago yesterday. He said the amount of Prozac I am taking is not a therapeutic amount and that it does not help anxiety as much as depression. He wants me to make a switch to Lexapro with no tapering. He said Prozac has a very long half life and with the small amount I am taking it would not be necessary to wean off. I am asking for advice here. I wonder if I should just switch over to 10 mg of Lexapro. And if I do, what should I expect? He swears the ringing in my ears I suffer from is not from taking Lexapro in the past (I thought it might be). The ringing has not gotten worse while on Prozac. I am nervous about switching, but don't feel like my anxiety is completely under control yet. Thanks!

Re: Lexapro or Prozac?

if its working to the point that you dont have to take the xanax anymore why not try upping the prozac dose instead of switching. just in case the lexapro doesnt work that way your not stuck back at the starting point!

Re: Lexapro or Prozac?

Well, I probably do need the xanax, but I don't want to take it for fear of becoming addicted. I will not allow myself to take more than .25 mg in a day. I haven't had any in 3 days, but I am about to start my period so I'll probably take one tonight.

The problem I am having with Prozac is that I don't sleep that well at night. I don't want to have to take xanax to sleep. I remember when I took Lex in the past I didn't have trouble sleeping.

I don't know what to do, but I think I will wait until after Thanksgiving before I make any changes.

Anyone have any comments on which drug is better? Thanks!

Re: Lexapro or Prozac?

I didn't have any luck with Lexapro. I was too tired from it. Prozac was better for me although I was not on it for long.

Have you tried changing your dose to a different time of day to see if you sleep better?
