started xanax recently
I started taking xanax recently. .5 mg. I take it usually once daily in the morning, and then sometimes at night if I can't sleep. I was wondering if it's OK for long term use? Will I eventually have to start taking a higher dose? My psychiatrist told me to be careful with it when I first took it because it could come on pretty strong. It didn't. But it works with my anxiety in the mornings and doesn't make me sleepy. Yet when I take it at night it makes me sleepy. Is this normal?

From personal experience I can tell you that a small dose of Xanax is fine but it can become very addictive in higher doses. If you start feeling you need to take more or it's "wearing off" then you should be concerned.

If you take it for long enough, you will become dependant on it, but imost people dont tend to need increasing doseages - if you do, thats a danger sign.

If and when it comes time to stop, decrease it slowly over atleast 4 weeks.
