Lexapro not working anymore

I was diagnosed with Post-Partum depression 8 years ago after the birth of our 3rd child. I went on Paxil and felt like my old self within 2 weeks. I also used Hydroxyzine to get through the anxiety. My psychiatrist said I responded very well to the Paxil. Well, after gaining a lot of weight and having my libido go down, I decided to switch to Lexapro. I was on 20mg of Paxil and went to 20mg of Lexapro. Lexapro seemed to work for the last 5+ years, but little by little the anxiety was creeping in. In January, I had the most stress in my life and have gotten really sick with Sinus issues. Long story, I am feeling just like I did after my daughter was born. Anxious and depressed and having a hard time dealing with everyday life. My regular doctor recommended that I go back to Paxil and the Hydroxyzine. I am scheduled to see a psychiatrist next week. Not sure why the Lexapro stopped working.....has this happened to anyone out there?? Could it be that I am 41 and going through Perimenupause???

Re: Lexapro not working anymore

All the SSRI's are notorious for pooping out on you after awhile. Lexapro did the same thing to me. Hopefully, your doc can Rx another SSRI that will help you. 5 years>>>>you got some pretty good mileage out of the lexapro in my opinion.

Re: Lexapro not working anymore

Thanks for your reply. My GP just switched me to Paxil 20mg/day. I used that back when I was going through Post-Partum. I am hoping it works. I am scheduled to see a psychiatrist and therapist to begin treatment this Friday. I am still wondering if it is a hormonal imbalance being 41 and possibly perimenipause. So, first day of paxil and taking Klonopin for the daytime anxiety and hydroxyzine for nighttime sleep/anti-anxiety. I am hoping this helps. I have been getting into a deeper depression everyday. I don't want to be around anyone or talk to anyone. My husband and 3 kids really need me back.

Re: Lexapro not working anymore

Ask your Gyno to check your hormones, it could possibly be peri, although most of them will prescribe antidepressants anyway

Re: Lexapro not working anymore

My friend, all medicines are ok to help you out of the present rut but the only thing you need is you. You need yourself back, if you know what I mean. Unless you try persistently to boost your confidence, and slowly gain control of your life, you will find that MEDICATION WILL TAKE YOU ONLY SO FAR.
I have been dignosed with anxiEty and panic disorter for the last eight years. I took medicines to help me control the SYMPTOMS, but it wasn't until, with the help of my psychiatrist, I began getting hold of my life and gaining control that I started getting better. What do I mean by control?
First, find something you like to do, like taking up a hobby, joining a club, starting exercise, etc. Especially the last one will help you lose weight AND produce the feel good hormones which will stabilize your mood. The fact that you are seing a psychiatrist will help you. Especially if you start psychoanalysis to look into the deeper subconscious issues which trigger the anxiety.
You must pick yourself up. Even if you started perimenopause, you can still do things for youserf and your family and control the hormonal imbalances by feeling good about yourself.
And a final word: Doing things for others, like volunteering to help people in need, will increase the level of your happiness more than anything and therefore lessen your anxiety. I have done all the things I have been suggesting to you and I have been off all pills for the last eight months even though I have been perimenopausal for the last 3-4 years!!! So there IS HOPE. DO NOT DISPAIR.

I did see my gyno this week and said that there is no real test for perimenopause (sp?). She did however tell me to up my vit d/calcium and vit b6 in the evenings and take a multivitamin in the morning. Supposed to help alleviate anxiety/depression for hormonal reasons. We shall see. She also said that 20mg of lexapro was a 'baby dose'....found that quote to be interesting. I did take my paxil today for the first time and hydroxyzine to sleep tonight.

Re: Lexapro not working anymore

Thanks to you my friend. I completely agree with all the things you suggested. I have been for the past 8 years, very outgoing, social, happy person. I am the PTO treasurer, mother to 3 kids, and wife to the best husband. I have always believed in positive thinking and doing. I volunteer at the school. I got sick in March with bad sinus infection and clogged ears for 2 months now.....it really sent me into this rut! I am working so hard on staying positive and getting myself out of this. I have, before the past 2 mos., always taken time for myself and relaxation techniques. I learned all of it through my talk analysis along with my medicine from years ago. Scary, how I lost all of it so quick over being sick?! Thanks for the reminder

Same with me ghelpmelivelife. Lexapro was really the best SSRI that I have ever taken. I was never able to tolerate paxil or prozac. I did take zoloft about 10 years ago about 2 years i think, it was really not that helpful and really impaired my sexually functioning.

Re: Lexapro not working anymore

I'm 57, going through menopause and my doc prescribed Lexapro for me for anxiety. Biggest, BIGGEST mistake of my life. I took that poison for 4 days and ended up being hauled off to the emergency room after 4 days of panic attacks which I had never had before. By the time I got there, my BP was 220/110 and my pulse was 125. They had to give me a downer to counteract the upper (which Lex is). I have since done extensive research about the anatomy of anxiety and have learned a lot about it, much that would totally contradict the psychiatric community at large. Anti-depressants are powerful drugs and doctors don't actually know what they do to a person. I'm so glad I survived the trauma of taking that drug. I'm fine now and doing much better without the use of any drug for anxiety.
