There is a supplement called GABA that supposedly works on the same portion of your brain that xanax does. It's an amino acid and usually when this amino acid is low in our bodies, it's why we get anxious in the first place. Using supplemental GABA is suppose to have the same calming effect as xanax.
Does anyone have any experience using it? Or know if anyone that has used it? I intend to search the internet to see what I can find. I don't want to have to be stuck using xanax for the rest of my life. And Anti-D's have not worked for me at all...other than to cause more side effects than I care to name.
From a Google search on GABA and blood brain barrier:
"...GABA is available as a supplement in vitamin stores, but taking it in pill form is not always an effective way to raise brain levels of this neurotransmitter because GABA cannot easily cross the blood-brain barrier. Companies are searching for ways to place GABA in an oil base in order to ease its entry across this barrier. "
Very interesting...I would love to take something like gaba. At this time I am working on a taper for klonopin....I was taking 2 mg every day for 7 years. I want to stop taking it all together.(safely) Any suggestions would be great!!!
Janik, I took a look at the post....and i am going to try the taper. I do not care if it takes me more than 5 months to get off the klonopin. I just want to be off of it w/o too many withdrawal symptoms. Thanks much!!! Cas
Yeah, I have taken GABA for many months, in capsules and just powder. It is the best thing I've tried for anxiety - calms you completely; also helps tone up the body and assist serotonergic transmission. GABA basically keeps the brain ticking over in a stable manner. It also helps me with depersonalisation and mild psychosis. I think it would help many ailments, and there are no side effects.
