cfiiman....well....I hope you are feeling better today. I was overjoyed this weekend as more feeling came back in my leg and foot. HOWEVER...I'm in the moment so worried that I have reinjured. I pray not. I have been doing everything right. I had already done my exercises this morning. I was making my bed of which I never lean over from the waist, or if I do, I raise my leg as I have been taught at PT. Or I bend from the hips. I also sqat as I have been taught....and that is what I did, and I felt the most awful pull in my lower back right above the tailbone. Oh man...I iced it immediately. I got in the McKenzie positions....but the second time I could not push up all the way and I have been doing these easily.
I have PT tomorrow so hopefully they will be able to have some idea what I might have done. I'm worried. I so hope I will come out of this and not take a giant leap backwards. And this is the peril of this affliction. I'll try to stay confident. Hope you are too.
After a terrible night with few hours sleep followed by a lot of pain and nerves I am wondering.
What is the compromise for a good night sleep? A lot of hours 6-7 with interrupted sleep or may be 4-5 hour and that's it?
The rest of my day was ok. I had 45 minutes walking in the morning with no pain, and even during the driving was not so painful.
So what you think?
Hi adopostos....for me, I would prefer 4-5 hours of uninterrupted sleep. I think it also depends on how many interruptions of sleep...like waking up in pain and having to walk it out or take meds etc. to get back to sleep...one has. But with our kinds of back issues....any sleep is also a good thing. :-)
Yes today i am feeling much better (is 6:15 am for me now) after yesterday’s physiotherapy.
Today I am going to visit a monastery out side Nicosia ( I do not know yours view about religion) The Saint called Heracledios (In Cyprus) gives a lot of help for our kind of problems. So I will pray for all of us.

I am glad to hear you're having a good morning adopastos. Unfortunately I have had two painful days ....so I hope that gets better very soon! (I seem to have pulled something...and hope it wasn't the disc moving further) while using a modified technique to make the bed...squating..of all things. Ugh.I did go the physical therapy today as well. I often ache a little after traction, and feel better the next day, so I hope I will.
I do believe in the power of prayer...and I practice it often, so thank you for keeping me and others in yours. I will do the same.
I am so sorry to hear that you are not so good but remember we have to live with it.
It seems like a sinusoidal wave some time we are extremely good, we forget completely the problem and from time to time this insisting pain keeps coming.

Are you doing any swimming for exercise?
Yes...you are right. I will get through it; a little better today, and I'll keep moving forward. I give this advice...:-)....on some days I have to remember to take my own advice.
You know, I have not tried swimming, yet there is a nice fitness club with a pool just near my home. I will ask my Physical therapist about this. What "kind" of swimming exercise do you do? Something specific or just basic swimming? Do you think it is really helpful?
I do have a small hot tub...I never had anything like that until I bought my current home, and there was one here. I do think it helps to sit in it for awhile. I have found though that sometimes I have to be careful with the jets and not sit too near them. Sometimes I don't even turn them on and just soak in the heat. So, that too makes me think swimming of some sort might be a good choice for me.
I think backstroke swimming is the best exercise for us, because in the water our body and the back has less pressure (That's what my doctor suggested, you can ask of course your doctor) I will start swimming after the physiotherapy sessions.
Regarding swimming, I believe you both are dealing with a disc herniation. Would that be correct?
Just walking in warm water is great exercise. You can walk forward, backward, and by taking steps to the side. It is beneficial to work with a PT who is familiar with aqua therapy, who can give you specific exercises you can do in the water that will be of benefit and not make your back worse.
Actual swimming is another matter. We all think of swimming as being great exercise because it protects the joints...but it isn't wonderful for all spinal conditions.
Many strokes keep the back in extension, which can be hard on the discs. People also develop disc issues in the cervical area from turning the head constantly or from holding it up in certain positions.
The other poster is correct in saying that swimming on the back is the best position for those of us with spinal issues.
Then there is the issue of kicking. My dentist herniated a lumbar disc and was told to swim laps using a kickboard and the flutter kick. He has faithfully done this and his disc healed and his back muscles are now much stronger.
With my lumbar fusions, I was told to NEVER use a kickboard and to only swim on my stomach if I am using a snorkel. I guess my point is that it would be wise to check with your particular spine specialist before taking on pool swimming as an effective/safe exercise or therapy!!

Hi teterri66.....thank you for this additional information! I don't know if my physical therapist will know the types of strokes, etc. that would be best. Yes...mine is herniation. I certainly will ask her, and will ask my doctor as well (although I have to wonder if he would know..). Since I am having a consultation with a surgeon on Monday and then hoping I don't have to see him again, :-), I will add this to my questions. Maybe a surgeon would know...?

My clinical view: Strong pain in the rightleg only during some activities (bending or sitting for long time)
The finding of my MRI was as follows:
Right posterilateral disc protrusion at the L5/S1disc level with moderate compression of theright descending S1 nerve root.
I am 2 months after the origin of the problem and i am following theconservative method of treatment with laser and electrotherapy.
My question is how long it takes for a disc like thisto be healed?
I have the same EXACT problem as you. I was diagnosed 9 years ago with the disc issue though. Did pt then, problem solved, but now it's back. Slowly, over several months, it came back. I feel that when the nerves are impinged, it can take a LONG time, and a lot of patience, for it to heal. I'm on Vicodin and Naproxen and it doesnt help much. I think I'm going to re-do an MRI. Make sure I am treating the problem correctly. Hang in there!
Just got back from my Neurosurgeon's office and my appointment went well. He said based on how well I've done since the shot that one more should do the trick and that he did not think surgery would be the way to go at least not now. He said he didn't even think I needed PT, just taking it easy as far as listening to when I'm in pain, one more shot and then he will give me some strength building exercises in about 3 weeks. He estimated about 2-3 months and I should hopefully be back to normal! I'm thanking God right now, and I'm hoping that is the way it goes. Funny thing is, the doc that gave me the epidural put it in the wrong place!!! He put it in L5/S1 and the herniation is in L4/L5, I remember asking if he was sure and he said he was, well I found out today it was not right. I still got a good amount of relief so I'm hoping the second shot in the correct place hopefully could lick it. I just wanted to post the reply for others who might be considering options like I am. My surgeon today did say that over 80% of herniated discs will heal on their own in time if you don't keep damaging them, so that is good news, everything we do until then (shots/pt/stretching/meds/etc.) is just trying to cope I guess.
cfiiman....that is great news! With the exception of getting the injection in the wrong place! I'd say tell them which spot when you go in next time! :-)
How soon is your next injection scheduled? And do remember that the exercises, even if you don't go to PT will be very important, and keep doing them all the time....even after you are back to normal. That will help protect you from injuring again.
I am one of those that seems to reinjure. UGH. I did the appropriate squat beside my bed last Sunday to tuck in the bed sheets, and pulled something. It was very painful. I have pain now again down my leg, but it is a bit better now. I'll go to an additional week of PT and hope I come out of it because I was so much better overall. If needed...I too will take another injection, as soon as they will offer another....if it comes to that.
