Ok, I'm 18 years old and really want to be on BC. I'm in college so getting pregnant would not be a good thing right now. I've tried BC in the past but it always made me terribly sick (nausea, headaches) and also constipated :S. Also I'm thin and I don't want to deal with the weight gain associated with taking the pill. Does Yasmin make you gain weight?? Also what about the side affects?? I also have mild acne and I heard that yasmin will help clear up acne is that true?? Please any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!

I tried Yasmin about 2 months ago, and had to stop after the first 3 weeks. It caused horrible depression and a lot of discharge, and virtually no sex drive.
There was no fluctuation in my weight either way, although it claims to decrease water retention. But I am on Diane 35 now and my weight is the same.
Hope your experience is better than mine.
Tyger.

how long did you stick with the yasmin? usually after 3 months or so your body adjusts to the pill so the side effects usually go away... I never had any at all except I gained a few pounds.
I gained about 5 lbs on BC ( Im on ortho tri cyclen)... and thats about it.... when i started taking it I was about 15 and 16 and starting to fill out everywhere anyways ( I was a late bloomer)... so being 5 feet 100 lbs it didnt bother me at all...
the weight gain isn't usually more than a few lbs if
it's any at all....
Oh and Diane 35 isn't as proective as other BCP. I was on that for 4 years and my doc took me off of it because of all the controversy surrounding it. wonderful for my skin, but not as wonderful for birth control. be sure your using condoms with it.

I was on Yasmin and after about 6 weeks I really started throwing up and horrible diarrhea. Well those conditions lessen the effectiveness of the pill (which I now know after research) and guess what, I am 14 and 1/2 weeks pregnant. Just do some research and trial and error with a condom LOL!!!

Yasmin is widly know for causing less weight gain than other birth control brands, but one never knows. If you're very thin you shouldn't really worry about gaining weight. Besides, would your rather gain weight then get pregnant? I sure would.
If you usually get sick on birth control i would suggest a low does monophasic pill. Like Mircette, or Alesse. The lower estrogen, the less side effect you'll *probably* have.
Also, i've never heard anything about Diane 35 being less effective then other birth control pills. If it WAS less effective the FDA would have pilled it off the market ASAP. All birth control pills are equally as effective, no matter what the dose of hormones is. Low does pills and high does pills protect you JUST the same, as long as you use them properly.
Good luck :)

I heard it right from my doctor's mouth. She said Diane 35 is not marketed as a birth control pill, thats just a side effect. she said the reason doctors prescribe it is acne. she also said it was like 96.5 percent or something effective, while the brand I'm on ( Othro tri cyclen) is somewhere around 99.5%.
not a big difference, but still, I thought i should point it out. Anything my dotor says I take seriously.

Hmmm...babydoll, I'm with Strand here...
I've been on Diane 35 for a long time now with no problems whatsoever, and been back for multiple prescriptions. I have brought up the topic with my doc who claims, as all the official websites do, that Diane is equally as effective as any other BCP. I'm in Australia, if that makes a difference?
It would have been taken off the market or the decrepency would have been made more publicly aware if there was a decrease in contraceptive protection, even as small as %3.
Yasmin is very new on the market so its probably one of the better ones, but bear in mind it hasn't been used as long-term as some of the others.
Again, best of luck,
Tyger.

While i respect the fact you value your doctors opinion, I don't always trust doctors. I've had a few experiences with visiting some different doctors who gave me some very odd facts on birth control, which weren't always true. (one told me Mircette isn't even a birth control pill and doesn't protect againts pregnancy, which is NOT true). So i don't really value ONE doctors opinion. Even the website for diane-35 says it is a contraceptive and an acne treatment, and is just as effective as other pills.
I'd suggest you do some personal reserach on the pill. Although doctors opinions are also important, they aren't always right :)

What I've heard - Yasmin is pretty much equivilent to Diane 35 as far as formulation, and Diane 35 has been sited to contribute to blood clot formation and has been alerted to doctors as causing such. Some doctors now have taken patients off of Diane 35 because of this.
Personally, I think Yasmin is the same and it's evil - I started experiencing leg throbbing and pains, arm squeezing pains, foot and hand numbness and horrible panic attacks. Never had a birth control pill EVER do that to me before. I quit 8 days into my 4th pack and felt like my old self 2 days after that when it was out of my system. I guess some women haven't had these side effects happen and it's worked out great for them, but I've seen TONS of bad comments on the net about it from women who experienced what I went through.

I have been taking Yasmin for about 4 months now to treat endometriosis. I take it on a continuous basis to stop my periods under my doctors instructions. I love it. It is the only pill that hasn't made me moody at all. I used to have really bad mood swings and they seemed to be getting worse and worse I am 33. It has actually made me happier and I don't have any mood swings anymore. My skin has cleared up and I lost 14 lbs since I started taking it. I was at 139lbs I am 5'7" so that's not fat or anything for that height but I was starting to want to loose weight for the first time in my life. I now weigh 125 lbs. I have not changed my eating habits at all. I have my whole life been able to eat anything without gaining weight and that was starting to change but the Yasmin caused me to go back down to a weight I am comfortable with. I think everyone's body chemistry is different so you never know how you are going to react. I do know that it is different then other pills in the fact that it is a diuretic and causes you to loose water weight which most of the other pills are the opposite and they cause water retention. The only thing bad I have noticed is my labido is very low but with the major pain I had with my endometriosis and periods each month it's a small price to pay for not having really bad cramps for two weeks at a time. I would say to try it. You can always stop taking it if there is a problem but with my experience I just love it and am going to keep taking it as long as possible.

hrmmmm, It's hard to know these days whats right and whats not... I may as well be wrong, but I trust my doctor and maybe what she meant is that it wasn't effective enough for just me for personal reasons.Anyways, it doesn't hurt to use a condom with the pill!
I'm thinking about going back on Diane and stopping tri cyclen because Ive been having nausea with it for the past 6 months and its not going away.
Actually now that I think of it, I've had two doctors tell me it wasn't as effective. maybe there's something to that.

Babydoll,
Since two doctors have told you that it is less effective, I might bring it up with my doctor at University to see if they have something different to say than my original doctor. It can't hurt to do a bit of research into the facts! ;)
But as far as Diane goes, I love it. I'd recommend that if you're having nausea with your current one after this long, go back to what you know best! With a condom for peace of mind.
Best of luck...
Tyger.

This is regarding the debate about Diane-35. The problem with the product is not that it is less effective than other birth control pills, it is in that it is specifically formulated to help severe cases of acne in women. As such, it has a different make-up and different risks associated with it. The manufacturer of the product in Canada has issued a warning regarding increased risk of blood clots (4 to 8 times more likely) and Health Canada has prohibited it's sale for birth control only.
Here is part of their public statement:
Dianette, also known as Diane-35, is not authorized [in Canada, the UK, and some other countries] for the sole purpose of oral contraception and should be discontinued 3 to 4 menstrual cycles after the woman's androgen-related condition has completely resolved.
For more info, here is a government link:
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hpfb-dgpsa/tpd-dpt/diane-35_e.html
As for all pills being equally effective for all women, that is also not true because some women need higher doses in order for the pill to work. For intance, continued spotting between periods is an indication that the estrogen content isn't high enough for the user. It doesn't happen to everyone.
Personally, I've had a pretty easy run with Alesse.

Can I just tell you how relieved I was to read this thread? I just finished my first pack of Yasmin to treat PCOS. I'm also being treated for depression. I feel horrible! I'm either totally down in the dumps or a raving, grouchy lunatic. I am not taking that stuff again. I was beginning to wonder if it was counteracting with my antidepressant, but maybe the Yasmin is just too strong or not the right drug for me.

Yes jitter, many women have experienced depression on Yasmin as I did, and if its making you feel down, don't take it any more! You shouldn't have to deal with an additional stress to your depressive state. Try a new pill with a lower dose of progesterone.

Thanks Tyger....
I just talked to my doctor. Told him what was happening and said by all means stop taking them. A case of the cure being worse than the disease. The only thing I worry about is the fact that this cyst on my ovary is about the size of a baseball, which means I'm at a higher risk for a rupture. Gonna try low impact exercise and small diet changes and see if it helps. I'm tired of putting all these chemicals in my body!
Thanks again...

I had to quit Yasmin after my 5th, yes..5th pill. I was crying for no reason and my face had completely broken out in acne. I'm now on Alesse, which so far is working great. I think it depends on your hormone levels. Some ppl have good experiences with pills like Yasmin, others do better on milder pills like Alesse. What bothers me most about Yasmin, however is the fact that it is very new. Some doctors are using it experimentally on patients. That's about the only thing I have to say lol

Where are you writing from, Babydoll?
Just asking because every doctor I ask here in Australia gives me the same answer...Diane 35 is just as effective as any other contraceptive pill, bar none.
Its annoying that I am hearing two sides of the story...I wish I could have a straight answer!
I'd just quit Diane and go to another brand...but I've had such bad experiences with Levlen and Yasmin, and Diane works well for me...I don't think I could hack the 'adjustment' phase ALL OVER AGAIN with a brand that may or may not have good effects! Grrrr :(
I just wish I knew for sure!!!!!

Gosh, I am surprised to see so many people having such bad reactions to Yasmin. I have been on it for 8 months and I LOVE it. It cleared my acne. I actually lost about 5 lbs. And of course lighter periods (but that is true for most BCs).
Everyone reacts differently to each kind of pill. You'll need to work with your doctor to see which one is best for you. But it can take up to 3-6 months to get used to any pill, so don't give up in the first week unless you are absolutely miserable.

I only made it thru the first pack of Yasmin. I was so miserable my daughter asked me to please stop taking them. There was no way I could have made it for another 2-6 months.
Not saying Yasmin is bad, it just wasn't the right solution for me.

I've only been taking Yasmin for about ten days now and for the past 7 I've been feeling so down in the dumps. Mornings are usually the worst. This morning I found myself holding back tears for hours ... over nothing. Life's ok at the moment so why is this happening?? I don't want to blame my mood on these little pills but can you tell me if this is what you went through? Does it get better if you keep taking the pill? Your advice is much appreciated.

You'll find that loads of women have had the same side effects as you Cadbury. If you do a search for "yasmin side effects" you'll find a site with a forum that has lots of women stating the similiar side effect. You may get better, you may not.

Hey there cadburycat,
If you have examined your situation at the moment, and there's no reason for you to be feeling depressed, then I'd say it is Yasmin. Try to bear with it a little longer to see if your symptoms disappear, but if not...or if you simply can't handle the blues...stop taking it!! There are many brands of BCP out there, and there's no reason for you to have to deal with one that makes you feel so unhappy and negatively affects your life.
Ask your doctor about a new brand :bouncing:

Yasmin nearly killed me, and I would tell any young woman to take it only at great risk of your life.
I went on birth control pills (Yasmin) for the first time at 38, was in excellent health, nonsmoker, not overweight, etc. I loved it at first, no side effects really, and I thought it was great.
Basically, a year and a half later, I was hospitalized for two pulmonary embolisms, and a major blood clot in my left leg. Now, five months later, my left leg is still 3 inches larger than the right, and my capacity for exercise is still greatly reduced (eg. walking up stairs is tough if i am carrying something heavy).
The embolisms nearly killed me and I lost part of my right lung, gone forever. Oh, and my optometrist found clots in my eyes! I could have gone blind too.
All of my tests show no genetic factors that would lead to a clot, and all the doctors ascribe it to Yasmin.
I guess when I read the potential risks on the information sheet that comes with Yasmin, and when I discussed it with my doctor, we all assumed that I wouldn't be the statistic, because I didn't have any of the risk factors, NOT ONE. Well, the stats says that these things happen because they do. So I would say, don't take Yasmin.

Regarding the Diane issue, kinda;
Understand this; Doctors receive a "kick back" from pharmaceutical companies for prescribing certain drugs. MOST doctors today are swayed in certain directions and opinions by these pharmaceutical companies via greed for more money (because of the "kick backs") or recognition or simply by the information (seminars and what not) that they are fed by this companies. Much in the same way we are with their commercials and mostly by trusting in our doctors so direly.
It is sad that the issue of Birth Control is not immune to such nonsense.
The best combatant is to research the crap out of it by looking at other people?s experiences. And now days we have this wonderful, super fast way to do this right here.
Understand this; Doctors receive a "kick back" from pharmaceutical companies for prescribing certain drugs. I'm not sure what to think of Yasmin.
I was on Diane 35 for 4 years and earlier this year my doctor said a new pill called Yasmin came out and asked if i wanted to try it. She told me that it was "safer" than the Diane regarding blood clots. I was also pleased to find out that 1 pack cost half of what the Diane 35 did.
My problems started about a month ago when i was on pack #4. My hair started falling out. I never completed pack #5 cause i was so scared. I now wash my hair every 4 days (used to be every second day) and i am afraid to brush it too much. I have noticed that my hair is thinning.
Right now i'm not on anything cause i'm not sure of what the next step should be. I thought maybe if i give my body a break things might get back to normal.
I never noticed any problems on the Diane 35 but as soon as i switched i also found myself feeling very low at times and bursting out into tears over things that i imagined were wrong.
