I have been on Synthroid and Cytomel for about a 1 1/2 years now I got a little of my hair back but not nearly as much as I would have liked. It is impossible for me to loose weight without totally cutting food out of my day. I thought I was going Bald but no one in my family has ever lost there hair. I can not figure out why my hair is not getting any thicker even though my Thyroid is within normal range. Is there another type of medication that I can use or what is going on can anybody please HELP ME I am loosing MY MIND.

Thanks Marcia I really appreciate your response I will try and get those items you spoke of. Can I get them at GNC? My hair is not falling out as much as it is not coming back so maybe those supplements will help. I do not really think I am under the kind of control I need so I am going to talk to my Dr and get my blood results and I will post them maybe that will help. Thanks again.
Donnie

Hi Donnie 317. You mention that on Synthroid and Cytomel that you are in "normal ranges". Where in the normal ranges??? Do you know where your freeT3 and free T4 are? For some people, hair loss doesn't stop until you get those ranges in the upper end. And neither does the problem with weight. It appears you have to have both the T3 and T4 up there to get results!

Also, female hormones can come into play. My hair was still falling out when my fT3 was very high and optimal. I now realize it's because I have been on synthetic female hormones. I have recently made a switch to using compounded natural estrogen and progesterone, and I am fairly sure it will be the final step in stopping the hair loss.

Hi Chinaberry
I am waiting on my Dr to give me the results from my blood work. I was on the low end of the normal range. She just changed my Synthroid to .1mg and 12.5 Mcg of Cytomel 3 weeks ago. I have been fighting these same symptoms for over a year now. I really appreciate all the help. Will my hair come back or am just without it forever? I can not even put Gel in my hair becasue it looks so thin. I will post my blood results as soon as I get them.

Thanks again
Donnie

Hi Donnie. In my personal experience, my hair loss started to decrease to the degree that I was improving my T3 levels when I switched to taking Armour thyroid (which has a nice amount of T3). Then, your hair simply has to start "regrowing" again, and for a head of hair to look thicker, the regrowth has to finally get close to the length of your current hair.

But I also noted that I still lose more hair than I think I should, and my thyroid hormonal levels were getting close to where I think they should be. That's why I also started looking at other factors, such as my female hormones. I have noted that to the degree I increased (or started) synthetic female hormones (whether birth control pills, or HRT), to that degree I had more hair loss!!! Hmmm. So I have recently made a switch to natural female hormones via cream rubbed into the skin. (I have to have female hormones since I am peri-menopausal and feel quite rotten with them)

I am also looking into the possibility that my testosterone levels are too low. I had never thought of that until my doc mentioned it to me. We will be checking that in January. It appears that is more a problem in women than was ever imagined by the medical establishment, and could ALSO contribute to hair loss!! I am right now on a small amount of natural DHEA mixed into the hormonal cream (5 mg), which is a gentle way to increase my testosterone levels until I am able to get lab results done to see what is going on!!

Hi Chinaberry
Thanks for your help I will talk to my Dr about switching to Armour. I have found hope when I thought there was none. If you take Armour will you need to take Cytomel as well? Thanks Again

Donnie
