Has anyone had an MRI for you TMJ? My Dr. has me schedule for one. He says I have a definite click in each jaw but my discomfort is only on the right side. So he ordered an MRI of the rt. TMJ. What can I expect? Thank you!

I am having an MRI tomorrow on both jaw joints. I'll let you know what I find out.

They use a miniture thing that works like a small jack. Will only open your mouth as far as you feel comfortable. It has been so long since I had one on my TMJ but the worst thing is the noise.

my doc wouldn't even let me have an mri done he said i would be wasting my money and now that i think about it he was probably right i mean whatever the mri shows its not going to change your treatment plan at all even if your disks are displaced the only thing they can do is fit u with a splint or more muscle relaxants if you haven't been given those already

I had an MRI done this summer and for me it was very useful. It was the only way for the docs to really see what was going on in my joint. They suspected something highly unusual but couldn't tell from the tomographs. The MRI confirmed it. We were also then able to send my MRI results to a TMJ conference with my doc and then off to specialists around the country to get other opinions (mostly to avoid surgery).

The MRI is not fun. It's really noisy and long, and you have to crank that plastic thing open in your mouth. But its WAY more fun than an arthrogram!! Good luck.

justanotherday,
You are lucky to have found the doctor you did. All I had to begin with was a displaced disc. Three surgeries later, I live a life of hell. After ruining so many lives, not "quite" as many oral surgeons recommend surgery anymore. There are still a few, obviously they haven't made their million yet.(MY OPINION)
I am one of the ruined ones, I am bitter at times but when it comes down to it, I am at fault. I made the wrong decision. Pretty easy to do though, when you are in so much pain and you start thinking "things couldn't be any worse". WRONG!!! How I wish I could turn back the clock.
Take care,
Elaine

I had the MRI of my temporomandibular joints this afternoon. It wasn't that bad. The facility had an open MRI machine which is not as intimidating as the tube. The part I had the most trouble with is trying not to swallow. It is so automatic that I couldn't help myself sometimes. When I am told I can't swallow, it seems I need to swallow all the more.

I feel an MRI was necessary for me. This has been going on long enough and the more information the better for an accurate diagnosis.

Hi cfreund - what did the MRI show exactly? I have had pain symptoms for so long, but my tomographs are normal as well. I want to suggest (actually demand) that my doctors take MRI's of the TMJ areas, since my insurance will pay for 90% of it.

thanks for any info!

An MRI was key in my diagnoses. I was checked for TMJD back in 95. That doctor ruled out TMJD. He did not have me take an MRI. Six years later, and gradual worsening of symptoms, I got rechecked and had an MRI. The MRI clearly showed my discs out of position. My right disc actually slipped backward, putting direct pressure on that ear. Always been my worst ear. I Think if that first doctor had me get an MRI. I would have been able to stop my symptoms from getting to this point.

The good news is. I'm starting to feel better. And I'm determined to get better!
Stay strong, and
Keep up the fight

mbr--

my MRI showed that my jaw is posterially displaced (very unusual) and there is growth in the joint that is preventing the joint from going back in place. The docs also wanted to find out what the disk was doing while I was opening and closing my mouth.

I recently had one which was a 'stand up' MRI so I wasn't in the tube. It's a bit noisy but there's no pain involved. They found out I have a subluxated disc so now I need to find a doctor who will cure it without surgery. If you've heard of anyone, please post the name! Thanks. good luck
