Hello hopefully someone can help me with my questions. I went to the doctor a couple of weeks ago because of pain in my ears. He said it was possible that I had TMJD but said he would treat it as an ear infection. I have been getting sharp pain in my ears on and off for a long time. I also have ringing in the ears sometimes. Every since this last incident with the ear infection I have been hearing a clicking or popping sound everytime I swallow or open my mouth kinda wide. The pain did go away with the antibiotics but the sounds are still there. I have read that it can be caused by dental work and during a dentist visit they were pretty hard on my jaw because they said I have a small mouth the were really stretching my mouth alot trying to get to a back tooth. Sorry this is so long. My questions are How bad can this get? Does it sound like I have it? Can wisdom teeth make it worse? I have one breaking through and it hurts. I was told to have them out because my mouth doesnt have room for them but I am too chicken. What can I do about it? Thank you to anyone who answers.

Are you on antidepressants. I know for a fact that they cause a lot of ear pain and noise? Just curious.

A TMJ specialist can determine if you have TMJD with a thorough examination and radiographs.

Hi Spotty,

My TMJ symptoms first "presented" themselves after I had an acute ear infection. This can happen sometimes. My doctor also treated the ear infection, but the symptoms never went away.
Yes, TMJ can be caused by dental work such as you described. If left untreated, TMJ will only progress.
If your mouth is already too small, the eruption of wisdom teeth in an already "crowded" mouth may make it worse.
It does sound like you may be in the early stages of TMJ by what you describe.
My advice would be to find a qualified dentist who has special training in treating TMJ disorder and at least go for a consultation. Some of the appropriate tests that should be done to confirm/rule out a diagnosis of TMJ are : Tomograms, Panoramic X-rays, Joint Vibration Analysis, possibly a CT Scan or MRI.

"Nip it in the bud" if you can!

mine started out with ear pain, was treated for ear infections for a year & a half & 19 anti-biotics later, i did have a wisdom tooth removed on the right side, where all my tmj & ear pain was & it did help to have it removed. it will progress with more symptoms, i had numbness on the right side of my mouth, neck & gland pain, pain in the roof of my mouth, eye pain & headaches. try to avoid stress & teeth grinding or clenching also never chew gum, it irritates the joint even more. hope this helps some.

Thanks so much everyone for your help. I am going to the doctor in a couple of days and will talk to him about it again. Hopefully its not TMJ. Thanks again!!
