Hi Cymy Sue,

No, I haven't heard from Elaine yet. I think she told me it would be a couple of weeks she thought, before she'd be back in cyberspace.

How are you doing?

Thanks for asking Marlene. I went for my 2 week check up with the new splint yesterday. My Dentist is thrilled. The splint is doing exactly what it is supposed to. I am feeling better than I have in a very long time. Many symtoms are slowly starting to ease up.

I had not asked him a lot of questions about this splint, I was so desperate, anything was worth a try.

I did find out that this is a "posterior muscle repositional splint" and has been used for some time with severely deteriorated joints due to disease.
This lead to the theory that it would work for people with physical damage, from surgeries, etc. And specifically people with no disc. They did know that if it did not help, it would not hurt, due to people with terrible arthritic disease wearing them with no further damage and usually some improvement.

It's the first shred of hope I've had in a long time.
I was under the impression (for about 10 years) that splint therapy would not help me, and I can thank a couple of very prominent surgeons for that.

It has raised some curiosity. I read so many posts and other information regarding "anterior repositioning", I though I might start a topic and ask for information, opinions, and thoughts on these 2 theories. I know what works for one does not work for the other, but I would like to hear other opinions and experiences.
Anyway, this is working for me. They almost had a party at my Dentist office. I've been going there 25 years, they told me I had not come in SMILING in about 20.

I hope everyone will find answers & some relief,
Cymy Sue

Cymy Sue,

An anterior repositioning appliance is what I had - and it worked wonders in my case!

Thank you so much for the encouragement. I'm very optimistic, but still afraid to get my hopes up too high. I believe my Dentist has precribed the best & only treatment that can make a difference at this stage of TMJD. I want so much to feel better, stop medication for pain and get back to parts of my life that have been taken away. I know you understand.

When you have time, would you mind telling me your history and the improvements you've had with the splint therapy. Did you have tinnitus and did the splint make a difference? Also, how long have you been using this type of splint.

I know it's all here somewhere, but this board has grown so much, I'm having a little trouble finding all of your posts.

Thank you again,
Cymy Sue

cymy sue,

I know what you mean about not wanting to get your hopes up. I have "only" been suffering with this TMJ pain for about a year, but it feels like a lifetime. My jaw has been dislocated forward, and the disc is stuck out in front. I have not been able to eat anything solid and have had varying amounts (and types) of pain for months. I have been to chiropractic and others, including MRI and arthrogram, been told I needed arthroscopic and then open joint surgery.

I started splint therapy in August and was starting to feel like I was HOPELESS, when suddenly my jaw started aligning!! I went to the doc on Monday and he was almost as psyched as I was with the change. He thinks I am now on the mend and my molars are starting to line up. I am just so afraid that it's not going to last. I have had so many ups and downs already!

If this really is better then I am another person who will be a splint success story. No surgery or intrusive procedures, just pieces of plastic! Amazing!

I'm so glad that you did not go the surgery route. Your reply and Marlene's has given me so much hope.
TMJ symtoms, no matter how long you suffer, are debilitating and can change your life.

I know so much about this due to experience, but have been lead down the wrong path by some in the Medical Profession (that I trusted with my life.)

I now have hope of getting off medication, and being able to do things that I have not done in a very long time. I now feel like I am getting back control, instead of TMJD controlling me.

I thank God for the Dentists, Doctors or Others that are taking a "new" look at treatment and are beginning to help people.

I hope everyone will investigate splint therapy before making decisions to have invasive procedures done.

It's hard to believe that with the kind of damage that I have, that this "splint" can make a difference in such a short time, but it has.

Thanks,
Cymy Sue
