This will be my 1st night wearing one.. kind of scary sleeping with this thing on and knowing that I'm goign to be moving my jaw like crazy (I grind my teeth). Is it possible that I move my jaw around so much that I place it in such a way to choke on it?

I don't think that will happen. I also grind and mine has never come off and I've never felt like choking from it.

Hi,
What kind of splint are you wearing? Is it for the top or bottom, mine snaps on my bottom teeth and wont come off, but I wore an NTI before and it fell out of my mouth, thank god I did choke on it, I would think it is always possiable but probably does not happen to often. It will be ok! :)

Between 1977 & 1992 I tried every type of splint and appliance that could be made. I had a fear of choking.
I was told by 3 different orthodontists, my dentist and my first surgeon, that they had never heard of anyone choking on a removable appliance. The brain's natural reflex is to spit it out if it comes loose. I had a couple that I could work loose or flip out with my tongue. They always ended up in the bed, somewhere.
I have the same type that Starr has now, it fits very tightly on the bottom teeth and takes both hands to get out. What kind are you wearing?

Take deep breaths, relax, and most importantly, wear the guard tonight! You paid too much money and are in too much pain to avoid wearing it. If you are anxious, call your doctor or nurse and ask for reassurance about wearing it. I think that you will be just fine. :) :)

I've been wearing mouthguards on my upper teeth for several years and have never had a problem.
Many of the guards will warm up from your body temperature and actually meld to your teeth.
What Cymy Sue said is also true. Your body has a natural reflex to spit out anything that touches the back of your throat.
I know it feels uncomfortable now, but you will get used to it.

I had the same feeling the first time I wore mine. The opposite happened to me for the first few nights, I would wake up in the morning looking for mine....lol
I would pull it out of my mouth while I was sleeping. I don't think you'll have a problem......Good luck
