Hi,
I have excruciating R jaw, cheek, chin and ear pain.I can extend my bottom lip outwards and it eases a bit.I have popping or clicking noises on the R side close to my ear,and when I eat I hear these sounds. My teeth dont feel aligned. The other day two days in a row I had a headache above my R eye.I have Sinus pressure most all time.

I do have a couple bad teeth on the R side, however I didnt think a Toothache could hurt this severly.I can take pain pills and it eases some but gosh it dont go away!!

I have an appt for consulation tomorrow(Monday)with an Oal Surgeon.I also have Panic Disorder and open my mouth ALOT to yawn or take in extra air(common with PD).I tend to stay stressed and Anxious most of the time.Do you think this could be overworking my Tempomandibular Muscle and do you think I could have TMJD?

Thanks,
Jasmine

Jasmine,

While I am no expert, your symptoms sound consistent with many of the folks on this board as well as mine.

I have had constant ear pressure (both ears), jaw pain, cracking, poping, grinding, muscle tightness, ear pain, tooth pain/numbness for about 6 months.

My dentist just confirmed that I have TMJD but I felt sure for the 3 weeks prior to the diagnosis. What I did was eat soft foods. NO exceptions.. things like pasta, soups etc. Cut out chewing gum, candy and other hard foods. Take Advil a few times a day. I noticed a marked improvment after only a few days. If you dont notice any difference, it does not mean you dont have TMJ but I would think youd notice something if TMJ was the cause.
Also you might try a heating pad a couple times a day on your jaw/ear area.

Good luck!

Hi Burgeke,
Ive had majority of symptoms you and others have listed. My biggest has been R facial pain primarily on my R chin.I have been chewing"lightly"on the L side and haven't been chewing gum or eating hard foods.Ibuprofen and the pain pill Ive been taking(Hydrocodone)eases the pain however doesn't completly stop it.

I get relief from warm compresses and warm water and salt rinses. Also I sleep under a ceiling fan on low at night on my stomach. This is a big no no..

Ive never hurt so bad in my face like this and I guarantee you I will walk away from the Oral Surgeon tomorrow with a scrip for a strong enough pain pill or me and him will go round and round.

It should be again the law to suffer and hurt like this!

Jasmine,

Did you know that Panic Disorder is the most common type of anxiety disorder that affects TMJ sufferers?

I have the same problems on my R side, but most of my pain is in the temporal region. The only meds I take (and haven't for awhile) are Motrin and Valium 5mgs at bedtime with my splint. I now just wear the splint (every other night) without the meds. The Motrin was tearing up my stomache and I'm afraid to get addicted to the Valium. My teeth and my jaw do not line up at all!! I have such a deviation that my son keeps asking me to open up my mouth because he can't believe it (he's only 8). I also sleep on my stomache, just can't turn myself into a back sleeper....lol

I go to a chiro which seems to be helping and I use heat on my face for at least 20 mins every night. Cold makes me spasm even worse. I haven't had hard foods or gum since August. In fact, this weekend was the first time I've had a steak sandwhich since my diagnosis. Of course had to cut it up!! Best of luck to you when you see the OS. Please let us know what he/she says......Jill

Jasmine,
Hydrocodone is not a med that will help TMJD. You need something that treats nerve pain. Carole, on this board is using Neurontin and having good results with it. It will put you in a fog till your system adjusts to it but for Carole it is working. There are several other meds used for nerve pain but right now my mind is blank.
Take care,
Elaine

Elaine,
Im taking Hydrocodone because of a few bad teeth causing facial pain.Im not certain if I have TMJ or not as Ive never been diagnosed, however I do have several symptoms of it.

When I make it to the Dentist OR Oral Surgeon(I have Panic Disorder-Agoraphobia),I will discuss with them and go from there.Ive noticed several people on this board that take Neurontin.

Thank you for letting me know about Neurontin being a great med for Nerve pain. Will keep everyone posted on what I find out.

Thank you :)
Jasmine
