I began posting and reading here yesterday, thank god for you all!.. I am extremely upset right now. I was told i have TMJ. I know this, but...! the things that i am feeling don't make me comfortable with other peoples symptoms. I have told you all that i have pain on the right side only. it is not in my "jaw" it is stays mainly in the muscles/tendons between the jaws (in the back) and migrates to the lower jaw, and chin, and lips, my right eye and even my cheek is swollen! and i have stingy pain in my right cheek. I swear there is something else going on. Does anybody else have these symptoms? Pain only on 1 side? stinging? I don't feel i have "normal" TMJ symptons. I do not get headaches, it doesn't hurt to chew, open my mouth, or talk. It is a constant ache, pain, that gets worse and gets better as the day goes by. I put in my mouth guard for now. I'm going to start wearing it 24/7!! I'm finding it hard to get a dentist to do a full jaw xray! i want to see the whole side of my head, and they won't do it!.. :-( any suggestions, comments, or just plain you'll be ok's would be really nice right now.. i am in about tears!.. thank you all sooooo much.......Mary

Dear Mary,
My name is Mary too. I see that you are in Woodhaven MI, I am in New Baltimore MI. I am not sure how far you live from Warren but I see a wonderful TMJ specialist there. His name is Dr. Stuart Davidson. He is very caring and sweet and he will do a complete tomogram xray and tell you if truly have tmj or not. Best of luck,
Mary

Hey Mary,

I have TMJ and only have pain on my left side and most of the pain is situated in the muscles not the bone....so don't try to pinpoint one area to define TMJ! It can present itself in many ways.

Mary gave great advice; check out her great doc and find out for sure what's going on! Don't freak out until you know!

Good luck..
Jennifer

Thanks for the great advice! I will definitely call his office tomorrow. It is so hard getting anybody to take any kind of xrays!. I have had the normal panoramic, but i want the jaw and the sinuses done too. This is awfull. My best friend had to have the surgery where they completely redid her whole jaw thanks to TMJ she is doing fantastic. 6 years, and she looks and feels great. i am NOWHERE near that. But i did want to ask again of anybody. Does it also hurt when you touch the bottom of your cheekbones by your sinuses too? Mine feel almost bruised. like someobody popped me there! lol.. Thanks.!!

Mary,
Hi, I hope Warren isnt too far for you to drive. He could get you started at least and reccomend someone closer to you. Dr. Davidson is a really great DR. He takes the time to explain things to you really well. He has been studying nothing but TMJ for over 30 years,(something like that) long before most people even knew about it. His office staff is really nice, they still run things sort of old fashioned. I have called up there and actually had Dr. D get on the phone to talk to me.
Oh, they do a mixture of billing dental insurance and medical insurance there to benefit you the best they can.

Good luck, let me know how it goes,
Mary

Hi Mary:
I also have problems on only one side. I am hoping that is because I have only one joint with a problem in it. I think there are many who have only one side that gives them problem. I hope you find someone good to help you. It sounds like Mary (Isew) has given you the name of someone in your state. I hope that they can help you.

TMJ isn't really just one disease with one set of symptoms. It is actually a generic name for a number of potential disorders ranging from arthrtits of the joint to muscle spams to slipped discs. And they now know that many times the pain you feel in one place is actually caused by an uissue somewhere else in your jaw ... it is a transfer of pain ...

I have pain on both sides, however one side is much worse than the other.

Hi Mary - do you know if Dr. Davidson uses a splint that only covers the bottom molars? You can wear it 24/7, and since the front teeth aren't covered, it doesn't really look like you're wearing a splint.

I have a splint that covers all of my bottom teeth, and I just can't wear it at work or when eating. However, in order for me to benefit from splint therapy, I really need to wear it 24/7.

Thanks,
mbr

Hi,
The splint that Dr. Davidson made for me is hard plastic and clips into my top teeth. I remember when he showed me models of splints there were many different types sitting there. It would be worth a call to his office to ask what you are looking for. Where are you located?
Mary
