I have to say I was kinda impressed. As I sat there in the waiting room, I had to fill out this questionnaire on tmj symptoms, I was still skeptical at this point. The office was nice and neat and cheery. I was asked into the examining chair and he came in. He was very informative, he showed me all kinds of models of the tmj joint, and showed me how your bite affects the joint. I showed him the bite plate my general dentist gave me and he told me to not to use it and he was mad because he said if they don't know what they are doing they shouldn't have given it to me and that this can make my tmj worse. He did not rush me in and out and he listened to all my concerns and symptoms. He told me I had all the classic symptoms.
He then did some range of motion exam and told me that my bite is not aligned properly. He gave me a lot of brochures on the tmj and he said he's been working with tmj for 20 yrs, and he is on the american academy of craniofacial pain association.
I have to get an MRI next before he can make me a splint....so overall I was impressed.

He sounds like my dr. Thats the way all doctors should be. Im glad you found someone that seems to know what they are doing.
Even though my dr. is incredibly busy (apparently he is the only one that insurance covers in a multi-state area) he always listens to me and never rushes me. Yesterday I had a 4:00 appt. They were so busy that he didnt see me until 5:30. I wasnt mad because I understand. They had several emergency cases and having been someone who was squeezed in for an emergency before I understand. And one person who drove from South Carolina for their appt. - a day too early. So they saw her. Anyway, even though it was way later than the office is normally open, and the nurse was chomping at the bit to leave, he still took his time with me.
Im also going for an MRI as soon as my insurance approves it. He wants to rule out any other problems first - but he thinks I have scar tissue from my surgery last year.
He is just a great guy. He has always told me the truth and given me all the risks, etc. Sure, I am in a lot of pain. But I knew the risks. This Dr. even called me every day following my surgery for over a week. Two weeks after my surgery when he knew I would be home alone he called me on a Sunday to make sure I was okay.
I realize I am lucky to have a dr. like this. I wish all of you could have him.
By the way, he is at Duke University Hospital - I know with the recent transplant tragedy Duke has taken a lot of flak. But they wont be hearing any from me.

PinkyPriscilla, Just wanted to say that is great news that you found that doctor!!!!! Isn't it good to finally have one that actually listens and doesn't think you are just crazy or something? Keep us posted as to what treatment he recommends for you. Shell

Lecach:
I have a doctor who is like that. She is often very late for my appointment but I never mind because I know when she gets to me she is not going to rush me either. It is certainly a refreshing change.
