Well I started my PT again today after 2 weeks off. My therapist is AWESOME!!!!!!!!

When I started my opening was only 25mm, after my first week of PT (twice a week) my bite was 30mm. Now, after tonight when he relaxed the muscle I am up to 35!!!!!

I feel so good I could eat a hoagie (NOT!!!) but hopefully one day.

I wish us all best of health and pain free days!!!!

Jill
(PS also saw my chiro today, think that helped too)

Hey Jill J,

I'm so glad the PT is helping! I started about 2 weeks ago - 2X/week. It's great! Everything is pretty loose so far except for my mascitor muscle on the left side...ooowwwwww! When she works on it, it feels like knives going through my head! But, you know the old saying, no pain, no gain!

I'm so surprised that all docs don't prescribe this type of treatment. My life would be miserable without it!

I hope things continue to go well for you!

Can you explain what your PT does during your appt? Massage facial muscles? Ultrasound? Tens? I've been to PT but no PTs in NM know about TMJ. They just give me the Rocobado exercises to do and then ultrasound for 3 minutes...no help what so ever! Thanks.

My therapist uses ultra sound for a few minutes then puts his finger in my mouth and massages the muscles while using the ultrasound. After that he just massages and works the muscles. Then he does this thing where he "stretches" the jaw. I am so surprised that I haven't been in pain afterward. Like I said in my previous post, my opening has gained 10 mm just after a few sessions!!!!! YIPEE I can eat.....lol

He gave me some exercises to do on my own and I also changed the way I sit at work. It's all good right now. The only problem I have is he doesn't think my deviation is going to go away without surgery. I think I'll wait on that since I'm not in pain right now.....Jill

My PT does the Ultrasound for 6 min per side (AHHHHH!) then massages or manipulates the muscles in my face, neck and upper shoulders.

I am fine on the right side and the left has been narrowed down to the exterior mascitor that's inflammed. The pain goes from my temple to below my jaw across my left shoulder and down my back! Quite miserable. I do the exercises I've been given and get a little relief, but my PT has told me to expect about 3 more months of misery and liquid diet....as long as I know it can be controlled, I'm ok with it...

I do have pain afterwards though. I only go twice a week...wish I could go more often! :)

Jennifer,
Three months of a liquid diet? Is this normal for after arthoscopic? Have you lost weight? I would like to lose 10 pounds but not like that. ha ha,
My appointment is Friday and I am still not sure if I am going to have it or not. I think my jaw is feeling ok right now, I have stopped wearing my splint because of this weird cough but I feel pretty good anyway.

Jill,
Out of curiosity, please ask your dentist if he is sure the deviation will be cured with surgery. I would love to hear the answer. After my third surgery, the doctor wrote in my reports that it was the first time in years, that my jaw opened straight. What a crock that was, it never has since the first surgery. A different doctor did the first two so I guess I had two doctors that couldn't get it right. Looks like I may have to go for broke because I am almost closed down.
Anyway, glad your pain is better.

Hey Mary,

Sorry you haven't been feeling well..hope you're on the mend! No, the 3 month thing isn't typical for arthroscopy. After my 1st surgery, it was 6 weeks of liquids or 'soft' foods. This time he said about a month and a soft chew was fine...it's the PT that has said that I will heal much quicker with no chewing.

My issue was two-fold...my joint is healthy and fixed, the muscle damage that it caused are still in the works. I have a really bad 'charlie horse' in my face that makes it painful to do much of anything, but I have to keep it moving! It's worse if I don't use it.

The myofacial pain is MUCH worse than the jaw! My jaw feels great! My right side is perfectly fine but the left is still painful due to the muscle snafu....

I really haven't lost that much weight because of all the meds...I have begun working out though and hope that will help! I'm all about an easy way to shed a few lbs!

I saw my doc this am and he put me in my bite plate for nights to stop grinding my teeth...I'm still on flexeril and bextra, but I'm feeling great! I miss eating solids, but food has become the enemy! ;)

Hope you're doing well now that your big contract is finished! Take care and let me know what you decided to do next about your treatment!

Hi Elaine,

I will tell you if/when I see the OS. Not sure what he will say, but from what I understand it will be the same OS that Autumn used for her surgery. As soon as I find out I'll let you know. Question to you, after all your surgeries your jaw still deviates? Mine looks like the monster guy from the movie scream only to the right more......lol

Jill,
My jaw didn't deviate before surgery and my opening was at 35mm. After the first surgery, not to mention the second and third, my jaw has deviated to the right every since. What I didn't realize, the pain I was feeling was all muscle and nerve related. Very seldom is it the actual joint causing the pain. Nothing has changed pain wise, since surgery. I have no disc so it can't be pain from a misplaced disc as I was led to believe...Uggh!
Take care,
Elaine

Jill,

My jaw deviated to the left quite drastically. You could really see it when I wore my eyeglasses. When Dr. Lanzi did the joint replacements, he did split sagitaril surgeries on the upper and lower jaws to make everything properly align. In fact my mom has to come over and put bands on my teeth before I go to bed to keep everything properly aligned while I sleep. This will have to be done until he determines it is healed enough to stay in the proper position without the bands. You can actually see where everything is in alignment now. He made me do everything so that he could fix the underlaying positioning problems which eventually led to all the damage in the joints. If I am ever able to I will post pictures of the before and after, so you can see the differences in alignment. (No pictures yet though, my heads still pretty big, not in ego though, LOL). http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/jester.gif
