I feel like I have horrible congestion in my throat - like there is something stuck at the back of my mouth/top of my throat. I'm constantly trying to clear it, but it won't go away.
This is a TMJ problem? Is there actually something there or is it just a feeling that we get?

It can be tmj related. Spasm and trigger points in the pharyngeal (throat) muscles can cause symptoms of constant throat clearing, chronic sore throat and difficulty swallowing. If a medical examination has ruled out other causes a neuromuscular therapist or other soft tissue practitioner trained in massage of the internal tmj muscles may be able to give you relief.

I also suffer from the "lump" in the throat feeling. I went to my dr who diagnosed it as a lump that's not really there.....there is a term for it but I can't remember it right now. He sent me to a shrink because he thought I suffered from panic attacks which brought this all on. Needless to say, this was ALL before my TMJ diagnosis. What we all have to go through before someone (dr) actually listens to us!! I do believe that it is muscle related as it comes and goes now depending on my stress level (it only happens on the same side as my TMJ and my jaw deviates on that side). for awhile I thought it was a tumor this that or the other thing. who knew!! Plus, the more you think about it the worse it feels. Go get it checked out so you get that peace of mind then try not to think about it. Best of Luck, Jill

This really bothers me, I wish there was something we could do, I feel like I am going to mess my thoat up by trying to clear it. I tried drinking stuff, gargle salt water, and nothing works. I really hate TMJ.

My OS told me to take a decongestant...it's drainage from your swollen sinus' according to him. It makes it hard to swallow things doesn't it? It also helps to drink as much fluids as you can so the drainage isn't as thick and difficult to drain....

get this lump it feels like your swollowing over an oyster....and its connected to my eustachian tube somehow,,,,,, im really scared of it....its like somehow congestion is stuck behind tonsil or back of throat ,,,,,,,i cant get to see doctor until next month and i think im worrying mysekf to death with this......my top of tonsil does seem swollen...like something behind it.....can it just swell without a sore or infected throat? scared here

Oddly enough, ever since my sinus surgery 3 weeks ago, the "lump" has been gone. Very excited about that!

I have the same thing. I had my tonsils out twelve years ago and thought that would eliminate the problem (they WERE abscessed) but still had the feeling at times. Recently I am having this feeling just as you describe it. I, too was sure there was something in there and had a CT scan and nasal scope. So I am interested to hear that you, jillj have it related to stress and the tmj. I am beginning to think that may be the case. Both my doctor and dentist kind of put down that idea. I hope I can locate someone who does the massage.

Yes, I have the same thing. I am constantly clearing my throat. It is a symptom of TMJ. Yep, add it to the list... :P
